any ideas on how to solve this problem - please advise, it's getting a little embarrasing in town

Worth checking that it isn't a simple metal-to-metal squeak cause by knackered suspension bushes allowing the wishbones to touch the chassis. If not, my guess would be dampers. Sometimes the noise varies with temperature. It might go away on its own when the weather warms up. In the mean time take the car for a good blast to warm the dampers up before you go through town.

Yes, my almost-new Ledas squeak too but a bit of warming up makes it go away. It's better than it was -- I'm hoping it'll disappear altogether eventually.
