LED Dash bulbs
Discussion
Got another dash bulb out so i need to take dash top off and change it, thinking about LED ones as they lower power and should last longer, only prob is the LED size seems to be a larger diameter on the actual bulb part so wouldnt fit in the hole in the gauge as such, has anyone done this and if so how ?
also anyone got an idea as to the LED power because the rating seems all over the place and not easy to follow

Check your gauges first... In my car I had all BA9 bayonet bulbs. I have seen others with some 501 wedges thrown in. Every car seems to have a slightly different combo!
EDIT: Also, I went for BA9 6 led wideangle superbright white bulbs which look great but aren't over bright by any stretch of the mind! I'm not sure ultraleds still do them but I think you can find them around the internet/Ebay

Those fittings sound same as mine. I know it's two of one type and five of the other - like you (mine is 1997 car with the two 501's for the tacho).
Have been meaning to fit them to my new Leven dash, and still haven't put back all the bolts yet, as meaning to fit the LEDs
But be warned! Heed 450Nick's advice - I expect your single spot light LED suggestion will be too dim. Nick used a six shooter and implies it was still dim.
I did quite a bit of research at the time, and was planning on using U501WHP4W type lamps for the 501 fittings. I see they now do a 4-LED type which should be even brighter, and have a wider angle - just not sure if they will fit through the lamp hole.
Let us know how you get on - but think twice about ordering the ones you suggest - they don't even list on the brightness rankings and have a tiny power consumption compared to the others. Or, order a few different types and see how they compare before making full order.
Sorry, I didn't mean that the 6 cluster was too dim, I just suspect that the single led bulb might be... I'd say my 6 cluster wideangle jobbies are just right for my purpose. They are plenty brighter than the originals and are nice crisp white with nice diffuse light (no bright spot on the dial), but aren't so bright that they cause glare at night. I probably wouldn't want to go any brighter or any dimmer. I would like to make the speedo brighter though. It uses only one bulb to the tacho's two. The tacho appears as bright as the smaller gauges, but the speedo looks slightly dimmer - I'm sure I'll get around to sorting it at some point!
As an aside, if you do find someone who can supply the ba9 wideangle 6 superbright white leds, I'd be interested in getting hold of a couple of spares as I did have one fail shortly after putting it in (must have been a dodgy one). I would also like to add some more gauges with matching leds soon so I'll need to get hold of some!

ordered a selection so lets see what looks ok and what doesnt, also the gauge around the original buld holder is all brown and burnt so prob changing to LED will also reduce het and might not make the gauges steam up at night, i've gone for these
501/194/T10 Single 10mm Blue Spot Light Bulb
UBA91W (233) BA9 - 9mm BC One Led White Bulb
UBA96G(233) BA9 - 9mm BC 6 Leds Green Bulb

Yup the green 6LED work a treat the single white one just isnt enough, nice to notice that they dont get hot at all, the old ones had burned the gauges where they fit in
Also got my dash top held on with velcro and gravity, seems to be fine so far, i have left the old bolts attached as i can always revert back at some stage if i need to. I just put about a 2" square piece where each of the bolts are, so there are 3 pieces holding it in

To subvert this thread a bit (apologies) I have the BA9 connectors, and the bulb in the oil pressure guage has obviously slipped out and melted/burned the white "tube" that it sits in in the back of the gauge. Also means I can't read the pressure gauge at night.
Anyone any idea where I might get one of those from? Can they be swapped without major gauge surgery?
Thanks in advance
John
