Is it shocks or springs you are after.. guessing that you have adjustable shocks anyway, it might just be a setup issue..?

Cheers,
Matt.

Are the standard units adjustable? didnt look like it., i will have a closer look tommorrow. mines a 1994 model. I suppose just dampers will be ok.
Car feels quite unstable at high speed, very "twitchy".

Twitchy ??? 9/10 yrs old ?? I'd leave dampers and replace the bushes!! Just been down that route.

If they're still original, the shocks are quite likely going to need attention by now. Your best bet is to find out what the problem is and fix that, rather than changing things that might be worn out or might not. The people who service your car should sport knackered dampers, bushes and so on although they might not spot geometry faults unless asked to check.

I have some spare rear shox - I upgraded to Spax adjustables.

You're welcome to them to see if there is an improvement.

Thanks Dan
Are they standard factory units?
Do they have adjustment?
How old are they?
Did your spax make any difference to your car?

The shox are standard non-adjustable, have done about 40k (assuming they were the originals).

I got a spax kit from CastleSport near Gatwick and they definitely improved the handling, after a full suspension laser alignment check. Springs are uprated.

They are height adjustable but you can't lower the car by much before it grounds out on the road or bottoms out on the shock. Damping is adjustable.

Standard shocks are Bilstein on a Chimaera and Koni on a Griffith.

Sorry to interject :

Does anyone know a CHEAP source of Bilstein rear shocks for a '98 500 ?

(free would be even better - I've a leaky one and want to hold off from the upgrade route for a little while yet.)

Just binned mine when the AVOs went on but you should NEVER mix and match shock absorbers!!
