After deciding to go for a blast today in Trev, 10 miles down the road it all goes badly wrong There was a loud bang and smoke emanated from the engine/exhaust and filled the cabin area. I managed to limp into a layby where Trev defiantly dumped the remainder of the entire contents of oil

I'm waiting for the AA man to bring him back home. I bet all the Porsche and Merc owners are going to love that down our road especially since I'm always defending TVRs reliability

I think that maybe the pressure got too high and the sump cap (?) is missing too.

Any ideas guys/gals??????

Apart from trade him in for a SL500...Grrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Bummer indeedy. Hope that the sump plug wasn't missing before it went bang Have you recently driven over any sleeping policemen or other objects? The sump plug is pretty exposed and can get loosened by grounding, eventually can work loose. Some folks have the plug drilled and wired to prevent this. Did you notice the oil pressure gauge in the 10 miles before the incident?

Very much hope this is just some minor glitch and that you're back on the road in no time. Looked for, but couldn't find a :Fingers Crossed: smilie.

When you say sump cap do you mean sump plug? If so and you stopped the engine pretty quick you may be lucky and not damage the engine. When I say quick I mean really quick, within seconds really.
Andy.

Sorry, yes I meant the sump plug. I was so angry I couldn't think straight. Anyways I've calmed down and not one to hold grudges when he arrived back on the trailer, my eyes welled up

Unfortunately, I couldn't stop straight away due to the traffic but managed to coast into the layby...probably took about 45 secs though On a good note, most of the oil was dumped whilst I was parked up.

It was scary, I thought the Trev was going to burst into flames

Did the oil pressure warning light come on (whilst the engine was stil running)? If not then you've probably not done any harm to the engine.

Yep, if the oil light didn't come on I'd be hopefully optimistic that this will cost no more than a new batch of oil and a new sump plug.

Get the sump drain hole threads checked for roundness/cracks.

Good luck

Sorry to hear about the troubles. I hope it just needs re-plugging and filling with liquid gold ... fingers crossed.

How long since the sump plug was last touched? I have hear (from my Aunties cousin who used to know someone who had a Rover V8 in a car they never had) that the sump plug can be bashed loose by a collision while driving along, then work it's way out while you drive. Ideal Bond gadget.

Okay I'll be serious now, Roz - As you describe what happened, loud bang, smoke, missing sump plug, etc., it sounds like you hit something like a brick on the road which dislodged the sump plug. Provided you stopped sharpish before all the oil had drained there should be no permanent damage - repair sump (if necessary), replace sump plug, prime the oil pump (vaseline - no jokes!)and refill with good old Mobil 1 Motorsport.

Hope that's all it is, good luck.
