Ever heard this? She ripped out the wires and dis belt slip??
Discussion
Hello all,
Very strange problem this weekend. She wouldn't start off the throttle and when she did it would just die with no throttle. I thought slipped throttle cable or something but no.
Anyway had the RAC out, total waste of time, some 20 year old kid who knew nothing and couldn't even tow us. Ended up with a tow from a friend to get to TVR Barnet.
Anyway on the 3rd or 4th start I opened the bonnet again and found a wire ripped totally out (both ends!) lying on the top and a black wire under the engine. Turns out it was the wires for the otter switch. I think it must have got caught in the belt and got ripped out.
Anyone else had this oddity occur?
Further to that the distributor belt had slipped - what does this mean? Where is it? I will ask the guys to show me when I pick it up. Apparently it had slipped and someone had just tightened it back up in the wrong place!
Final problem was the casing on the "fuseable link" to the started motor. Another £40 to replace.
Are all these faults common? £200 ish all in a good price? ABout 2 hours labour apparently.
Very intrigued to learn more about this motor.

Translation: it has thrown the fan belt off probably because it wasn't tensioned correctly, and the fusible link needed replacing. I guess they have quite a high hourly rate to bring that up to £200.
Only £60 an hour.Distributor belt is fan belt - ah I get it now. They said it was "out of alignment" like a timing belt I guessed. Don't reall yunderstnad, need to speak to them when I see them.

Here you go should only take 2 mins to fit
It'll vary quite a lot depending whether the car has aircon or PAS, and whether it's serpentine. Replacing the belt would be quite a quick job in any case though. It has no aircon but does have PAS.
Where are the lining up marks on the fan belt?
It is a 95 Chim - how do you tell if pre-serpentine? I should read my bible more shouldn't I?

Ian
No lining up marks on the “fan" belt - just pop it on. (It's not a cam belt)
Serpentine engine has just one belt (wide belt compared to pre) to run all ancillaries, pre-sep had at least two?
The lovely shiney engine in Dave's attached pic is a serpentine engine - note one single belt snaking around all the pullys.

Makes a lot of sense - off the top of my head I think mine is a serpentine. The engine in that photo look just glorious. I could look at it for hours Serpentine engine has just one belt (wide belt compared to pre) to run all ancillaries, pre-sep had at least two?

Hi all,.
Just a quick update for all on this now got back from the garage £185 poorer
That covered 2 hours labour and £20 for an ignition fuse + VAT.
Anyway the faults:
The timing was out on the distributor cap. There is a bolt holding it to the engine towards the near side of the car. Loosen this (passing socket through the HT leads) and the whole distributor cap swivels, altering the timing.
Using a strobe light the timing could be exactly lined up. Mechanic informed me that it should not go wrong again now. I think it was related to the vacuum advance flak coming out and upsetting the whole system but I could be wrong.
The wires were connected from the expansion tank to the otter switch for the fans.
Hope this helps someone in future and saves them the £185!

First of all I can't believe the search worked!
Out on a run this morning and came to an ubrupt halt, smoke, and a clanging noise. My belt has come off but along with it the wheel at the bottom of the pic shown (excuse my lack of knowledge) any idea what's involved?
