maybe im just being a bit suspicious, my 98 chim 4L has just gone in for its 30k service, it needs rocker cover gaskets and new clutch master cyl
i realise this could be normal, but the car allegedly had a service b4 i collected it from the dealer, i have done roughly 1500 miles since so could it have been spotted then or not????

Was it the same dealer that supplied the car that serviced it ? If not you are going to have to get involved yourself or get a third opinion . Is the servicing garage looking for extra work or did the dealer miss it , taking it that it was with no faults on collection of the vehicle , there will always be a grey area to the effect that these faults have could have appeared in the 1500 miles of use you have had.

What's wrong with the rocker cover gaskets? Are they leaking? If so, you'll see lots of oil at the top of the engine. If you're not doing much mileage (1,500 since last service?) they can deteriorate. Ask the garage to explain exactly why they need replacing and then let me know. If they're not actually leaking then I'm intrigued! However, from memory (I am in Venezuela at the mo!) this should be a pretty easy job as its all pretty accessible. Gaskets are next to nothing and I wouldn't expect too much labour.
Same sort of thing with the clutch. This is likely to be much more expensive, so get an explanation. Have you noticed any trouble with it? Is the system losing pressure (i.e have you had to put too much fluid in lately)? Has the pedal travel changed? Have you noticed any fluid under the car when it is at rest (could be in the car also, in drivers footwell - as without looking I don't know where the master cylinder is!)? Sometimes the seals go in master cyclinders and again, it can happen when the car never moves (brake fluid is slightly corrosive!), but it sounds a little young for this.
There are symptoms for both of these things, so they must have noticed something that you have missed (or maybe just not looked for!). You are well within your rights to ask. Generally, if any mechanic comes up with something I am not expecting I'll be there with him having it pointed out!! Particularly if it is expensive!
Either way - you are within your rights to demand the parts after the work has been completed. Should be fun!

These aren't unusual or expensive repairs so don't think you have any particularly reason to suspect 'foul play'. However well the car is looked after, things *will* go wrong from time to time. Is there any particular reason to think these things were already faulty when you bought the car? If not I suggest you just deal with it.
I have just had a new clutch master cylinder fitted by TVR. Car went in for its 18,000 mile service (17K on the clock and was last serviced at 12K). I did not know there was anything wrong with the cylinder until they called me to say it was leaking a little (no fluid detected in foot well etc). Cost was £43.88 plus 30 mins labour (£21.00) + VAT - and that was at the factory. In the grand scheme of things, that is a minor repair to me and not significant. Just the kind of thing you have to expect when running any car really.
I just re-read my note and can't believe how shirty it sounds! I am abroad at the moment, having eaten something grossly unpleasant which is trying to force my entire lower bowel out of my bottom. My apologies. I also appear to have used my extensive mechanical knowledge (!) to confuse the cost of a clutch master with a brake master. So again, I'm sorry if you sold a close member of your family after reading my note. If its any consolation, I spent the night in more pain than you could possibly imagine. In fact it felt like I was trying to eject a clutch master cylinder...
Nevertheless, I am still shocked that it has gone so soon. In all my years I have never replaced a clutch master and I've owned some real doggy cars. Depending on how close the garage is, I would still like 'showing'. I have a deep and unecessary mistrust of mechanics, borne through bitter personal experience.

Rocker covers can leak out the rear end, into the central valley between the cylinder heads - out of sight. Not much oil acutally finds its way into this top part of the engine (honest, take the oil filler cap off and look when the engine is running) so you're unlikely to see a nastily leaking rocker gasket from the 'outside' side.
Clutch master cylinders are a commodity - expect to need one evey 2-3 years if you do decent miles.
