stepper motor

Hi TVR-lers, stupid question = what or how does a stepper motor do - work, i keep hearing about them in forums in germany, but i do not have a clue, sorry.

The stepper motor controls the amount of air entering the engine at tickover by moving the valve closer or further away from the valve seat in the plenum chamber.

So on my Chim 400 where is the stepper motor as I suspect it needs attention, erratic idle & occasional cutting out after high revs?

Drivers side and rear of plenum
As for the cutting out it probley wont be the steeper
