Argument - Speedhump v front splitter !

Speedhump won - For now !

Had a run in with a ridiculously sized speedhump last week - proved completely unnavigable, meaning I had to drive the wrong way out of a one way system and over a pedestrian area to escape from a local car park.

In the process, the speed hump ripped the splitter (I believe its called this) from the underside of the front of my car - its now in the boot.

I will be DEALING with the local auth on the speed hump issue and may come back for some advice on this - however in the meantime, just wondering if driving minus the splitter does any harm ?

Robby, Don't think there are many cars around with a splitter still attached! Couldn't tell you if it makes a difference mine has never had one.

There are other threads on here which cover this if you do a search. But from memory answers varied from, helps cooling slightly to reducing bonnet lift at speed >100.

Either way it must have been put on for some reason, even if it is small.

Here's the Department for Transport road humps regulations, appropriate heights:

more than 75mm is not recommended unless it's a raised junction, and the prescribed maximum height is 100mm.

I had mine ripped off, drove without it for about a month, had it re-fitted (bought a new one for £15).

Can't say I noticed any difference without it, but I just assumed TVR must have fitted for a reason.......

Perhaps not ?

My S is the worse for wear after speed hump run-ins.

I have the car very low i must admit, but even so the speed humps around beighton in sheffield fianlly killed the nearside outrigger, it was a bit weak anyway but now it's actually split and come adrift at the front corner, there's great big scrapes under it from the ramp too .. bugger.

trouble is the ramps were those square ones that you can run over in nay high saloon car at waaay over the speed limit, in any sports car you're reduced to a crawl which annoys the drivers behind! .. I resort to blaring my hooter every time i go over a speed ramp(it must be ok to do this, if there's speed humps there must be a high risk of a hazard somewhere close else why have them, so I sound mu hooter as a warning !!), they're the work of Satan himself ..

I didn't think the ones at Beighton are too bad. Seen much worse ones elsewhere. The raised junction at the bottom of Fraser Road nr Millhouses had a good 6 inch drop before the council came back and reduced the height.

Agree though, they're the work of Beelzebub - I reckon a splash of holy water on them and they'll vanish in a cloud of sulpherous smoke

Just came off the phone to the local authority - they had a number of complaints and the humps were removed last week. Apparently, the LA has not yet 'adopted' the car park from the developers as they would not approve it before the humps were adjusted - hence my claim is with the developers. I shall however, pursue them vigorously ! The LA by the way is Wyre Forest District Council - look after Kidderminster and surrounding area.

Well good luck, these sort of 'in transition' cases always seem to be an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, but I admire your spirit and detrmination.

Keep us posted as it will all be useful info for someone else in the future.

I've got 2 bashed splitters in my garrage, nether of which stayed attached to the car more than 3 months (1 the victim of rough ground at a garden centre car park, 1 had an argument with a speedhump at York park and ride)

I don't intend putting another one on. As people say most Chims don't have one anymore (I checked the local TVRCC, about 20% had one). From my experience, very little difference with or without, did notice a small increase in high speed stability with the splitter fitted though - over 100mph (in Germany, obviously ). Might have been my imagination though.

The other advantage is supposed to be cooling, so if you find it's getting a tad hot during the summer may be worth getting one fitted again as see if it makes any difference.

Just an update for the benefit of all - contacted the developer yesterday to check progress. Stated claim has been past to insurance co who should be settling shortly, - not holding my breath though, knowing insurance companies.

However, I always find a personal visit to their reception just before they close for the evening works wonders - 'I'm not leaving until this is resolved' !

All they want to do is go home !
