My chim is due new dampers and I am not currently in position to splash out on Nitrons so was going to book in for some Gaz pro golds but noticed in sprint that RP are doing a deal on protechs. Are they any good? There was a pollon here a while back where they seemed to get a good feedback but the sample size was pretty small.

Have a look at Racing Reds (Neil Garner in TVR Mag).

Racing Reds are made by the same company as Nitrons!!

I just had Gaz Gold Pro's put on mine - bleedin' fantastic! It has transformed the car immeasurably.

People spend £££'s getting an extra few BHP here and there but I firmly believe this new setup makes me quicker point to point than extra BHP - I am a happy chappie.

GAZ make 95% of their own parts and assemble. Quite an impressive facility they have too. Nitron just assemble bought in parts as far as i am aware.

Protech for me...

Heard great things about them and they are the only ones to come with 3 years warranty which says alot to me smile

Very nice people to deal with as well.

Just fitted Protechs this week so a bit early to say too much but first impressions are really good, they seem really well made too.
I bought them direct from Protech and they threw in a free C spanner £520 iirc

Cheers for the feedback. It would seem that either Gaz or Protechs will do a good job. The decsion is likely to be be made based on convienience of a specialist to fit them and do the geometry check. Whilst I've recently been using Xworks (where I'd get Gaz fitted) and I'm very happy with their service as I'll probably get the bushes changed at the same time it will be more than a mornings work so will involve sorting out dropping the car off and is a bit of hassle. Raceproved are only about a mile from the office and are advertising a deal on protechs. Based on this it looks like Protechs.

Raceproved fitted my protechs and did a great job, transformed my confidence in the car - really improved the handling and roadholding....till that dozy Belgian crashed into the front of it...mind you Raceproved are mending that too...

I've still standard srings and dampers on my 450,what difference do these uprated units make on the road and to some degree on track as i'm looking to probably going this route.

See my post earlier. The Gaz have transformed the handling, ride and my confidence in the car - net result makes me quicker.
Had a great drive back through the A and B roads yesterday from the MBW meet and drove up via the A3 so gave them a good workout. Much smoother and improved ride, no tramlining and no nasty bangs or crashes over the more uneven surfaces of Sussex/Hampshire blacktop.
All in all money well spent.

Unless you are talking about the wishbones, Protechs come with the mounting bushes built in so no worries there. Front took me two hours and rear took about three plus I was fiddling about with other bits and pieces as I went so should be less for the pros!

With these kits do you get a choice of spring rating, or do you just go with the recommended ratings? If you get a choice what have you typically gone with? thanks

If you buy direct you can specify spring rates yeah, I just told the guy that I would be adjusting the ride height very slightly lower than standard and the car would be for regular road use and left it to Protech.

So far I am very pleased. On fitting, the height was already set at standard and I just went 5 clicks front and back on the damping and the car feels great. I may drop it a bit after Christmas but not bothered yet.

There is loads on here about spring rates if you have a search.

Just been to Rp and booked for a set of Protechs in the new year. Saw your Chim in there Snorky, looks a nice job they have done! They also had another chim on a ramp having protechs fitted.

I have had Pro-Techs fitted for about 2 years, they do the job and the service from them if faultless.

Standard springs are too soft imho and I would fit + 20% at least.

I had this until recently but have now upped to 450lb front and 400 rear as I do a fair amount of T/D's.

The secret of a good ride is correct adjustment.

With these heavier springs I use only 3 clicks for the road and it is surprising how supple the ride is.

Click up a further 4 or 5 and the ride is really firm, too firm for the road but great on a smooth track.

So would you say that the standard springs are too soft for road use? or was the too soft statement aimed at track use? thanks

I had standard springs fitted to the Pro-Techs but these would occasionally bottom out on the road at speed on undulating surfaces, (so did the originals).

+ 20% cured that with no effect on ride quality and I used them on the track as well for about 18 months.

I would not go for standard, they are just too soft and you will try and compensate by clicking up the dampers!

Peter.

Just a quick question. What is the weight of a Chim? Distributed front and rear? I'm fitting a coilover setup on my TVR-Healey project and I'm wondering if a Chim setup would work w r t spring rating.

Thanks/ Jonas

Can't help I'm afraid, Joans, but I too would be interested to hear what spring rates people are using.

My car was one of the first fitted with the new Gaz Monotube dampers last year and the damping is superb, but the springs are currently a touch firm for road use, so I'm keen to hear what sort of rates other people are using.
