If you have the CATs removed, obviously its an MOT fail, but how does it affect your insurance. Sort of..what came first.. If you have an MOT, then remove the CATS what do you tell the insurance company.. If you tell them you have no cats does it mean that the MOT is invalid and therfore your insurance is invalid etc.. Not sure how you stand.

Fair enough I spose..So what do you tell the insurance company.. I've got no Cats..? or I've got a modified exhaust.

I'd say 'modified exhaust' or 'non-standard exhaust'. If you tell them you've had the cats removed they'll wonder why you're on about pets. Some of them asked me if my addition of a 'boost gauge' increased the power. I wondered if they even knew what the word 'gauge' meant.

I'd guess that you've hit the nail on the head there.

To the law and your insurance company you'd be driving without a valid MOT if you removed the left hand tyres from your car, so I don't see why cats would be considered any differently.

O...still non the wiser now then..

Race boy, how did you sort yours. Did you just remove the CATs, or get a full de-cat exhaust system.

Would you necessarily fail the MOT without left hand tyres?
It would pull to the left a bit!

I've had everything that ever converted any catylists removed from the standard exhaust, well the cats actually removed themself to start with but having them trapped in the pipes didn't seem like a good idea, I actually waited until renewal time with my insurance company (which wasn't long) and when they asked 'any mods' I just told them, yes, the cats have been removed from the exhaust, as it was a TVR specialist insurance company he knew exactly what I was going on about and said, 'fine, no problems'

I don't think a lack of cats is an MOT failure if your car is old enough. I could tell you how old that is, but I do know that some TVRs that were built with cats do not strictly speaking need them to pass the MOT.

My guess (from looking at profiles) is that if raceboy is legal, TomPob would be too.

'Technically' a 94 Chimaera 'should' be fitted with a cat, but I have a valid MOT and an emmisions printout for the car on the day of the MOT test which shows it within the required guidelines
I can see where you're coming from, from a strictly 'Legal' sense, but the number of newer cars running without cats, that have them fitted for MOT day only, bikes with non E-Marked race cans, etc, etc, it's not something I'm going to lose any sleep over

Race boy, how do you go about removing them then? Does it have pre cats as well.. Really not sure how to approach it... Do you just go to a machanic and say " Do me a favour and take the CATs out", How does it affect the performance, and does the ECU need a re-map... Help me O - B Wan your my only hope.

Well I took it to my friendly local PH award winning Indy and said, 'why is it running like a bag of nails?' and left it with him
The phone rang and he said 'your cats are dead, do you want me to just cut them out and weld it back up, or replace them?' it took me about 0.5s to say just wip them out and weld it back up,
I think the pre cats can just be knocked out, or in my case they feel out, but the main cat in the big central down tube has to be cut, the cat removed, and welded back together again.
No other mods were needed, no ecu re-maps because you keep the lambda sensors, it gives no real power increase over a health exhaust but it does give you more noise and a bit of a firework display

You can pass the MOT with no CATS. My 98 has stainless manifolds and a full de-cat and passes every year

By all accounts it's 'tuned' to run like a bag of nails and you switch on every available electrical item and thrash it just before the emissions test. The more load on the motor the better apparently.

Personally I don't ask awkward questions like that.

My insurance don't need to know such technicalities as far as I'm concerned. I have a valid MOT and in the event of the unthinkable happening, how many insurance inspectors would have a clue where to look for the catalytic converter on a Chim?

Of course if the MOT tester just happens to stuff the exhaust gas analyser sensor up the exhaust of a similar (but cat equipped) vehicle by mistake that would also work...

Quite a few because the insurers normally use auto engineers. All they have to do is look for a lack of lambda sensors or just tap the manifold to hear a more resonent note and bob's your uncle... no pay out. De catting is a modification and your insurers MUST be told about it. If not you have just invalidated your insurance.

End of story.

Yes I agree with the tell "the insurance Line" (sic) approach.

I guess my policy is cover yourself, too much hassle any other way.

I have heard the the MOT centres are going to come under much tighter guidance in the not too distant future, in that it will be much harder to get through the emissions part. Their systems will be able to identify the operator and the car.

This could spoil the party!

Dont want to spoil the party, but your MOT is only Truly Valid on the Day of the Test. To wording for the MOT and the understanding by a few mechanics and plod is that. The garage has tested your car and believe that this car will be MOT standard for the next 12months if you keep on top of general maintanence....

If you remove the CATS you will fail a MOT and hence your insurance will be invalid.. IF you tel them you have had the CATS removed.

Some patrols cars now have emmisions tester now and dcan do it at road side.. So if you been driving down a B Road in the CHim Flames coming out the back the police will probably pul you over and test you. If you fail the roadside test. They can issue a form and remove your car from the road this invalidates your MOT and requests you retake the MOT within 28 Days

Hope it helps

Interestingly we currently have a '99 manufactured non-Cat Chimaera 4.0 originally supplied to the Isle of Man (different legislation) that has accompanying factory paperwork to facilitate mainland MoT testing.
