Went out in the 500 today as it's been covered in snow for the past couple of days and I figured it needed a run to dry everything out.

Car started and ran beautifully, popped into my mum and dads and then over to see the wedding photographer...

got back into the car, turned the key and it just cranked over but refused to fire, after a couple of attempts I thought, 'hang on - I didn't hear the FP prime' by this time it's chucking it down, so I get out have a quick look under the bonnet and check nothing obvious has come a drift - it hadn't,

So now soaked I get back in the car, crank it over a few more times in the vain hope that it would clear itself and then, hey presto, the FP whirred into life and the engine fired.

Got home, parked up then 10 mins later came back out to move the TVR so I could get the Zed out and it did it again, FP refused to prime, a few more turned of the ign and it burst into life.

So, here's my questions.. FP or FP relay? Where's the relay, is it with the battery, and is the FP an in the tank variety? - I don't have my 'bible'; to hand so any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks in advance..

Relay is on the very fine ECU wiring, its metal and there are two metal ones so try either. They are different from normal relays as they are parralel output, not change over. But i think that one also supplies the other, just to make it interesting. There is also the immobiliser side of things to consider, three circiuts, ign, fuel and starter.

I've had this happen a couple of times over the past year. Somehow felt it was connected to the immobiliser. So if I don't hear the pump prime (very rare) I press the fob button to lock and immobilize it, wait a couple of seconds and then press it again. Might be worth a try next time.

Isn't it strange what makes one look under the bonnet to see if something's come adrift when the car was running fine before it was parked (especially in the rain)?

Also the fuel pump is wired in a very amateur manner and lives on the chassis, deep inside the nearside rear wheel arch. One of the wires could be a little loose (connector a bit like the low tension coil connection).

I'd bet you've got a loose relay or similar though. unplug/reseat them all (think the 2 for the fuel pump/injection gubbins are blue and in the tangle of wires that you stuff on top of the battery.

Thanks guys, I did try settimg and resetting the alarm but it didn't seem to make any difference.

I know what you mean about sticking your head under the bonnet, I know a fair bit about cars but i still popped the bonnet like a knob and tried to look knowlegeable.

I'll dig around in the passenger footwell tomorrow.
