firing her up

I'm about to start up a chimaera 4.5 which hasn't run for 6 months. I'm worried it may just go bang or be seized. Is there anything I can do before turning the key to help it start up ok ?

Depends what you did to prepare it for non-use for that length of time. But if it was mine I'd do the following: Recharge the battery. Dump the oil, replace the filter and re-prime the oil pump. Take out the spark plugs and squirt some wd40 into each cylinder, disconnect the fuel pump and the HT lead then turn the engine over to lube everything. Add some new petrol since the stuff in the tank may have lost some of the more volatile components. Pull it all back together and that's the engine taken care of.

Hope you didn't leave the handbrake on - otherwise freeing the pads off the disc may require removal of the caliper - don't try to break the seal by driving away.

Its only been a few months, personally I would disturb it as little as possible, try and start it and hope it fires quickly. The main danger is dry bearings and cam followers, and the worst thing you can do is keep cranking it over at low rpm with everything dry. Once it fires immediately check you have oil pressure, if not switch off and start worrying, otherwise take the revs straight up to 2000 rpm or so and hold it there for a minute to keep the load off the cam while all the oilways fill.
