Handbrake (NOT!!)

I've not had her long & after a short drive I parked on my (slightly) sloping drive. About 2 min later, while my back was turned I heard a sort creak noise & turned to find me pride & joy going solo! As luck would have it it rolled into a bush just before hitting my Passat (1.9 TDi Yum!) That stopped it without damage. Thing is the hand brake was on when I checked it. I just about managed to get it to go one more click. I'd set it as per the bible with my foot on the brake.
Any way to make it work better?

Leave it in 1st gear as well

TVR handbrakes are shite. I wouldnt leave mine on anything resembling a slope without it in gear.

I was watching Swordfish with a mate recently when John Travolta pulls up the handbrake to stand up and shoot the 2 cars that go flying past. I commented to my mate at the time how the handbrake working was more sci-fi than the rest of the entire film.

Did nobody tell you, It seems to be a tradition on British sports cars to install a handbrake that doesnt work, my Lotus is fitted with one too!

And Shnozz is actualy putting it mildly... apply the handrake whilst also pressing hard on the brake pedal. And as said, a gear on any real slope. PS. Remember its in gear when you go to start it, as it is far from cool to lurch jack-rabbit stylee out of a parking space when you turn the key...

lol .. the cars in the film were fited with line locks to only use the rear brakes off the footbrake .. i remember the main stunt driver demonstrating to tiff needell on top gear how it worked ..

TADTS - They all do that, Sir!

Physics - you heat the brake discs up - they get thicker. Apply the hand brake as hard as you can, while they are hot. Leave car. Discs cool down. Handbrake no longer holds.

We did this with a demo Tamora. Parked it up on parents' drive after some enthusiastic driving. All family outside Ooo-ing and Aaahhing over lovely car. Suddenly it starts rolling towards us
