Where to go for MOT ?
Discussion
My MOT is due soon and I'm just setting about arranging it. While my father uses a local place, which is good and can be trusted I wouldn't imagine they see many TVRs. I'm keen to take it here as its local and they've no real vested interested in finding 'jobs to do'. However, are there common things that they may not understand - LSD ? (diff not drug), handbrake ? Any advice appreciated - or of course am I best going to a specialist ?
thanks in advance.
thanks in advance.
Not all TVR specialists are approved to do MOT's. They simply take clients cars to their local testing station.
I suggest that you ring up your nearest TVR dealer and ask them who they use? Current official cost of an MOT is £40.75, although some garages will discount this price.
Cars with Limited Slip Disks should not be put on the brake testing rollers that all MOT centres are now obliged to use.
Therefore TVR's have their brakes tested the old fashioned way by road testing using a meter put in the passenger footwell to test retardation under braking.

If you're near Windsor, I took my Griff to SG Autos at the junction of St Leonards Road and Imperial Road - the one next to the Texaco garage.
They were quick, courteous, and didn't fail it on any of the typical TVR quirks like invisible number plate lights, chassis surface rust, or splits in the steering gators.
Cheers,
Pete

Just to add a little something else.....
Ny other half drives a Jag XK8 and one cold and frosty Saturday morning muggins here had to take my Chim and her Jag for their MOTs. The place I went to was one of these back street MOT centres, you know the type, the 'one behind the petrol station'. Anyway, while mine passed no probs they failed hers on a dodgy suspension part. Oh well, thinks I, it's a 97 car so perhaps it needs doing. Called up the local Jag place to have some very nice chap there say how ridiculous it was that the car failed as those parts are really rather strong. He advised us to bring the car to them and they would give it a once over and re-MOT it. It passed no problems whatsoever and along with our test certificate we were advised that a lot of these back street places really don't know what they're on about. The moral of the story is that for the same price it's worth the trip somewhere where they know the cars and their idiosyncracies. Otherwise, like us you could waste £40 for nothing. Happy driving, Simon
