yet another stepper motor query
Discussion
We all know that the conical end of the stepper benefits from regular cleaning but is the mechanism itself prone to sticking? ie does the rod with the cone on it refuse to move in or out? I had my stepper motor out at the weekend and cycled the ignition on and off whilst watching the stepper and it buzzed but didn't move. Is this a valid test? I've been having problems with a very high idle speed and wondered if the stepper was sticking in the most open position.
Yes, they can get sooted up and stick. Clean carefully in petrol using a soft brush. Check ease of movement before putting back ( a swish of WD40 may help )
Be VERY careful tightening up - too much force and they snap !
Suggest a little silicon sealant on the thread to help keep in place.

Whats the recommendations for how often you should clean the stepper motor then. Mine car seems to run/idle fine so should I leave well alone or give it a clean anyway??
i only bothered doing mine first tie when the car ran slightly worse than usual but now tend to do it as a matter of course every 3 months or so since its only a 5 min job when checking oil, coolant etc.
