I know this has been done before, but I can't find it so please help.

What are the most likely problems for an erratic idle? idle seems to hunt between normal and 1500 - is it just a case of cleaning the stepper motor?

Thanks in advance

Have the ECU fault codes checked first.

Usually but not always. Always a good thing to start with though.

Mine does this occasionally. As a stop-gap measure turning off and on again usually solves the problem.

My 96 Chimera 4.0 does this as well, changed stepper motor to no avail, Team Proactive tried a different ECU and said the problem didn't happen, so recommended a new one, they never mentioned a fault code. Didn't fancy that though, I will take it to David Batty for a look I think, I will keep you posted.

I've seen some ECU code readers for about £20 at Halfords. One is designated for a set of Rover V8 cars. I was wondering if by some miracle the Chim might use the same ECU. Anyone know?
