My wiper rack and wheel-boxes are making grinding noises. Can someone give me some clues how to get access to them. I have a 94' Chimaera which doesn't seem to have any access into the wipers from the dash. I have a feeling that later models may do. Do I make a hole from the dash side or do I remove the perforated panel on the outside after drilling out pop rivets?

Many cut holes from the rear of the dash just so it is hidden, but that is a lot of extra work..

You need to cut the vertical face if you do it from the engine bay, so only need to bend the mesh up out of the way a little. The way people like shiny stuff in the engine bay a couple of ally plates sealed & screwed to cover up always seems the better way to me?

Hi Mike,

having had my wheel boxes replaced there are 2 ways to go in.

You can either take the dash and lower dash panel off and cut out access holes (a pain) or cut small access holes right underneath the wheel box plastic housing from the engine bay side. This is how my mechanic did it so I would say that's least hassle.

When done you can glue the cut-out bits back underneath.

Thanks guys - looks like I'll be going in via the bulk head then. I bet access isn't going to be easy !

Remove the motor and the rack pulls out, a ten minute job. I'd check that and lube the pinions in situ before I got the drill out smile

You will probably find that if you pull the cable out from the wheel box tube and then rotate the wheel box shafts 180 degrees then push the cable back in, everything will be fine.
Just lube the cable up with plenty of grease before refitting.
If you think about it only one half of the wheel box gear will have been used in normal operation. So if you rotate them half a turn then the other half should be as new. (well mine were)
