V/ tight Otter switch

I have one of the lower temp switches to put on. The problem is it feels like the original was put on by a Gorilla on steroids!
I'm worried about damaging the alloy swirl tank by using too much force to undo it.
Is it better to try it with the engine hot or cold?
Am I worrying too much?
