ok..need a serious upgrade of the ICE before my 4000 mile trip around Europe after Le Mans!!! (brave/mad?)
currently have bog-standard single CD face off with crap front speakers.
I prefer to use MP3's if possible and thought about connecting an iPOD via one of those 'trip' gadgets that tunes into the car radio?? but unsure... this would remove the need for a multi-changer in the boot though.
So, advice please - any suggested shops/websites and costs£££

Can't claim to have the best system. Had Infinity speakers fitted today (see my post in this forum).
The front speakers aren't as easy to fit as you may first think as there are no 6" speakers made these days. Have to get 6½" & mine had the grill modified as its this that presents the fit problem.
I have a Pioneer single CD/MP3 player model DEH-P5500MP. Went for this unit as price was good & it has a 4x50 watt MOSFET amp which is quite powerful. Also you can get 11 albums on 1 CD in MP3 format at good quality & 22 at a poorer quality so don't need to carry too many CD's & don't need a changer.
I didn't want to spend out for an amp as it's not my main car. In my main car I have MB Quart component fronts & a 10" sub in the boot run off a stereo 60 Genesis amp. 1 Stereo amp to run 3 speakers sounds like its not enough but I've had this set up in a couple of cars now & it sounds good.
Problem you will have with getting a sub in place is where do you put it. I think it would have to be a custom fit but I stand to be corrected. I did think about good components in the front & a custom sub box on the shelf behind the sets with a Genesis amp then decided it was more than I wanted to spend.
The car will drown out mosts systems with the roof off & exhaust on full song!

I currently run a minidisc system, I wanted to beef up the sound without detracting from the car's storage (no sub box in boot or 6CD hanging off the tank) so I took the two airflow vents in the rear, moved one to the middle so the car will still demist properly and fitted a pair of Rockford Fosgate 6x9's in the rear shelf. I then took the carpet trim out above the tank and fitted a cheeky amp in between one of the 6x9s and the now central vent just to drive the rears. A lot more clout for minimal disruption.
My system's not the best out there but I've just had an Alpine CDA-9831R head unit fitted: single slot CD which plays MP3 and WMA too. DAB compatible.
Looks very nice, has a motorised flip down faceplate which is also removable - I really wanted the latter as I've had a flip down non-removable stereo nicked from my other car.

Got some JBL 6x9s amplified in the back and I've just been told about some JL TR600s which are 6" and will slot perfectly into the front without all the hassle that you hear about on previous posts here.

I went a bit mad on mine.
I have installed the following, 3 way DB audio speakers front, 4 way DB audio speakers read (350 watt), pioneer CD/MP3 head unit, 6 disk changer and the best bit is a 1200 watt legacy amp in the boot.
I can hear my music very cleanly at any speed with the top down.

I've got the same stereo head and I can definitely recommend it. The previous stereo was a weedy JVC thing, but it did have a aux-input jack in the removable facia which would be perfect for the I-Pod. There are quite a few that have aux-inputs somewhere and this would be sooo much better than one of those radio things.
