My 500 has been laid up for a while, and has had a flat battery for a while too. I have jumped the car off, and ran it long enough to get a vestige of charge into the battery, and now it is trickle charging nicely.

Only problem is, the alarm seems to be making a high pitched whine constantly, whether on or off. When set off it just flashes the indicators once, no siren.

Does the alarm have its own battery, and if so why is it not charging?

Car is 96 model. Not sure which alarm is fitted.

So no-one has had this problem then? Or did my posting get buried too quickly so no-one noticed?

Does your keyring fob have a diamond shaped logo on it? if so its a Meta probably a 99T1 like mine.

Just had to replace the siren unit (£93) because it woke me up at 3am on Saturday - probably went faulty due to water getting in from last weeks hailstones.

Dealer I went to had several in stock which says something to me about Meta alarms.

you can test the system without the siren attached, if it works as it should (except no sound) try replacing the siren unit.

I too had the siren replaced after a 3am incedent ... frukawankofshttboolcks ... siren also had water damafe according to the repair shop. It's got its own battery which although flat, was enough to make a little bit of noise. Might be what you're hearing.

Me too, damn siren
Anyway, working 100% now. When I was looking at what might be the problem (clearly likely to be water damage) I had a quick look under the dash. TVR never fail to amuse me with their sporadic quality, as I find certain electronic boxes just loose, only their wires stopping them from rolling anywhere. Hopefully these issues are sorted on the newer cars (thought mine was, only 1998!!).
As a precaution I have made a makeshift plastic cover for the new siren and raised the wiring to try and shield it from the elements, I'll have to sort something a bit more sexy looking long term but should do the trick for now.
Cheers,

Something I'm going to have to do too after a episode... is it the time of year or what?

Would be interested to hear where you got the alarm unit replaced and whether you did it yourself or got the dealer to do it. The dealer I spoke to recommended replacing the entire alarm, microwave sensor and all as he said they hadn't been too successful in replacing just the siren unit

Well you know what he can do with his suggestion?!

Just checked the keyfob, it is a Meta (but no diamond). Says Meta System M100RC on the back, has three diagonal stripes in plastic with 3 diagonal buttons (which are in fact just the one button).

The Meta immobiliser fob is on separate on the keyring.

It seems to have shut itself up now, will test it tomorrow.

I spent a week deliberating about what to do about the alarm (immobiliser was still working and as I can make out is all separate wiring anyway.)

Spoke to a number of alarm people including Meta dealers and most of them wouldn't touch the car (obviously aware of the TVR wiring strategies....) after checking the wiring around the car I deduced that the siren was at fault and rang around.

The first Meta dealer wanted the £93 for the unit plus £188 to fit it (I laughed so loud.... £188 to plug something in under the bonnet 2min job)

I got a bit narked at this point and decided to rip out the alarm myself and fit a new one until someone mentioned the insurance invalidity.... so eventually rang local dealer who were quite happy to sell me the unit separately - which I did. Fingers crossed its been ok but I'm going to try to find a strategy for protecting it a bit better.

The way I see it the best price I had to replace with a Meta or Sigma was about £300 all in, after speaking to some specialists I can get a Toad for about £150 so I'm still saving money even if after replacing the siren unit it fails.

phil sounds like the Meta 99T1 with 36T immobiliser same setup as mine - incidentally the dealer was prepared to let me test the siren at their premises before buying it.
