Engine Pulleys

Hi everyone,

I've got a sepentine engine with no power steering or air con. The pulley on the right hand side of the engine which I think maybe used for the power steering has started to pull out of its bearing by about 1 cm so the belt now runs half on and half off the pulley. Is this a common problem or is the bearing worn out?

I had a problem with the pully on my griff. Not that it moved, just that it became very noisy.

The part is a standard landrover part as far as I know and only costs about £25. It is also quite easy to fix.

I know this is not the same problem, but I hope this info helps in some way anyway.

Had the exact same thing 2 weeks ago, sometimes you can get the bearing back in, but often needs a new pully, which is what happened to mine, I think TADTS at some point.

what kind of noise was it ?? I've just had the belt changed at service and I get a squeaky noise when I first start the engine - bit like the belt is slipping but when things ( the belt ? ) warm up it goes away.???
If I rev the engine, on the run down I get the noise...

I have exactly the same problem - I have a 400, no aircon, no pas, serpentine engine. about 4 weeks ago the car started to make a squeaky / whining / clattering sound. It would happen from cold until something (at the time i thought it was coming from the belt tensioner pulley) - got round to changing it. Thought all would be ok after. started it up then low and behold the noise was back. Belt off again, to feel the water pump pulley / alternator / and dummy pulley (on passenger side). Water pump seemed to have a bit of float so thought i would change it out. I took a chance and won one on ebay - arrived next day - pump felt good, no float in pump shaft etc so I fitted it.
Then start up engine.....guess what.... noisey b***dy comes back!!! tried the screw driver method, listening to the various pulleys, sounds like the noise is coming from the pump or alternator area...hard to tell.
I took the drive belt off - no noise.

The harshest noises go away when warm...still hear some kind of whine / high pitched scream thou if you listen carefully.

I guess the next move could be to try a new belt - only thing is it was replace about 2.5K ago. Anyone tried the belt dressing spray?

Hhhhhhhhhhhelp! god dam it i have no street cred in the mornings now driving through my housing estate! the people i see at the bus stop arent privey to nice blips of the throttle and down changing pops and bangs...instead they get scccccccreaach.etc... DOH!

Any ideas please!

yep that's it.... mine has a new belt too - when it was last serviced the alternator started making a whiney noise so they changed the bearings in it -so I suspected the water pump too - it's the warming up thing that makes me think it's something to do with the belt...may try the belt dressing ( or talcum powder ) method....I'll be back <arnie mode off>
