hi i have to replace my battery, but im not sure on whats best to fit. the one in the car at the moment has type 072 on the top. i went to my local halfords this morning give them the reg and they say its a 075 but when i looked at the battery the terminals are the other way round to in my car.
in my car the positive is on the left as u look into the footwell im hoping thats how its ment to be. halfords 072 battery terminals where the right way round for my car, and looked the right size but only 510amp the one in my car at the moment is 580amp.
does anyone know what is ment to be fitted to the car as standard.
did make me laugh when the lad behind the counter said if i buy there most expensive battery fitting is free, bet they would not know where to start fitting it or even be able to find the battery in a tvr.

Going by what others have posted on here in the past the 072 is what is fitted to most cars, but not all.
Others have got 096 sized casings in there and some 075s, but that might just have been due to them shopping at Halfords or not knowing any better, or being too lazy to take the old one out first.
IMO if you already have an 072 in there then go to a decent Motor Factors and get the same, my 072s seem to last 4/5 years and have never let me down so I stick with them. I wouldn't get too bogged down with brand/labels, most are out sourced anyway nowadays.

The 072's were all that you could get into the space on the very early cars - they had the battery mounted up in the air with the fusebox on the floor. If you have a floor mounted box then you can squeeze an 096 in which has 650A cold cranking, you just need to get one with reversed terminals, Varta make one that is available from battery specialists (I used ManBat). Its worth laying straps in to aid removal if you fit one of the larger batteries BTW.

An 096 won't fit in my 2000 X reg - I tried one.Always best to take the old battery out and take the empty box to a decent motor factors IMO, notice the word Halfords has not been used
Sorry if you know this already but it make life a lot easier if you remove the battery in its box as a single unit. Replacing can be a pain as you need to line up the bolts with the holes in the car floor but this becomes an easy job if you lay a mirror under the car so you can see what is happening.

Plus some tape and a marker pen in the foot well so you can line up the battery box in the right place before even having to go underneath.I put an Optima Red Top in my Chim 18 months or so ago and on cold mornings my Chim has always started quickly since. Tonight's forecast is for -8 so I'll be interested to see how it goes in the morning!
I sold my little 99 Chimaera in the summer but am I missing the point here?......if the terminals are the other way around don't you simply turn the battery around?? Surely there's enough wire to get them connected? I know the 99 battery wires were not really long enough to be able to pull the battery right out into the foot well which would have been nice.....

When I changed mine I went to my local Vauxhall dealer and bought the biggest capacity battery I could find which fitted the box and had the correct terminals in the right place.
With trade club discount this was about £70 plus VAT with a 3-year guarantee. My TVR is in winter storage so cant give you the exact part number right now but PM me if you really want to know and I'll ferret under the covers to find out!
I'd also recommend having a pop riveter handy as in my car the glassfibre battery case was pop-rivetted to fit snugly around the battery. I had to drill out the old rivets and replace with new.

I've just fitted a type 075. It was only £59 from Tayna. The one I took out was a 072 which is a better fit in the box (larger) and has more power. The terminals on the 075 are a different way round so you have to turn the battery 180 degrees, but that's easy. So the 075 fits, but 072 is preferable although much more expensive.
I have just needed to change the battery on my Tamora and ordered a Exide EA755 from Tayna to replace the 069 that I took out, dimensions look the same even though the spec says it is 270 wide the battery itself is 250+the fixing lugs. It's sitting in the back of my office waiting for me to take home and fit tonight. Terminals are the right way round and it's substantially cheaper than the 072 Halfords one.
