Smelly rear end...!

Hi all,

I was driving the car the other day with the window open and when i stopped in traffic i noticed a smell from near the rear tires! It smelt a bit like burning rubber? i got out the car and noticed that there was a bit of smoke coming from near the rear wheels! Any ideas would be appriciated.

I had this on the front last year - and the smoke!!! The brake caliper was not completely releasing offside front. When seeing the smoke, try touching the alloy wheel (carefully!!) for confirmation as it may be very hot! The brake calipers can stick due to lack of use but ours turned out to be a brake pipe. Both fronts replaced and happy ever after!

Edited to add - as yours is doing this on the rear, as well as the above, it could be handbrake not releasing completely?

a word of warning...if you are gonna touch something you suspect to be hot, do it with the back of your hand....if you do it with the palm, the initial reaction is for your hand to grab said hot item

Thank you all for your responce! How else can i cheak if it is releasing properly other than burning my hand? I use the car every day but it has only happened a couple of times!

She is due for a service in about 6-7 weeks, is this too long to leave it?

It depends how bad it is, I suspect if it`s smoking then you may be able to feel if the brakes are actually sticking by stopping on a slight hill and see if it rolls or holds. With our front problem, we jacked it up and tried rotating the wheel, could definately see it was binding. Once we knew there was a problem we had it sorted straight away. Could excess heat warp the brake discs or do other damage if left too long?
