I was told by a reputable garage man that my diff was on its way out due to the noises from the rear (without actually driving it ?! ). So bowing to greater knowledge this is what I thought until this afternoon when I noticed that its louder on RH turns and almost silent on LH turns. Also, I thought diffs whine. My noise is, umm...a, yunn yunn yunn. If you actually say that out loud, 3 yunns a second and repeat, its actually quite close ! 
So my best guess is its not the diff surely ?
Anyone good at yunners out there ?

Is it any louder when accelerating, on overrun, or under light throttle load?
If it's loud under load (i.e. quieter on light throttle) and worse on one side than the other i'd be tempted to check wheel bearings.
Easy way? Jack the back of the car up so that both rear wheels are off the ground (axle stands may be a good idea here) and then spin one of the rear wheels and listen for any funny noises.
Do the same on the other side.
Having said that, i could have sworn the rear nearside wheel bearing on a car i had a few years ago had gone, turned out to be the front nearside... only worked it out when span both rear wheels in silence, so i tried the fronts (for fun, you know) and the front n/s was very rythmically thrumming.

New driveshafts aren't that pricey are they? They're only off a Sierra!!
I've had various noises from the back in my year and 1/2 of ownership, from clunks when the slack is taken up, to whines at anything over 50mph. Also judders when pulling away.
The faults where fixed by replacing the diff bearings for the whining (6 of them i seem the remember), and the UJ's on the prop shaft for everything else (only cost £100 at my local garage!) Never had to replace a driveshaft though.

You can imagine it, well officer..... Yun Yun Yun Yun Yun....
its not a clunk or a clonk, it doesn't start at, say 50, or get louder with speed. It gets a bit deeper going round corners however more your sort of 'gryun gryun gryun'. Its got to be a bearing hasn't it.
