I've got some cool gadgets (contact me via my profile if your interested in one!) that measure your 0-60 time, but what I was wondering is, what's a safe level to take your Chim up to in revs?

I've got a Chim 500 and I beleive tops at 6000 with the ECU limiting at 6250?
I havn't tried this, but I think I can get to 60 mph in second gear if I rev to about 6000.

1/ Would this be the best bet (saving a gear change)
2/ Is it OK to rev your 500 this hard or is it a bad idea?

What's the best bet for getting a good 0-60 time? My gearchanges are not good so 1st to second will be fine, but 2nd to 3rd will probably loose me about 30 seconds :-)

By the way, I'm planning to try this out on a disused airfield near by!

I was exagerating, but you get the idea, if I try to change from 2nd the 3rd quickly I will probably miss it (5th then 1st then reverse! :eek ) and loose time getting into gear! Either way it'll be easier if I can get to 60 in 2nd.

I have a Chim 450 and can easily manage 60 in second (verified by road angel) so I wouldn't worry too much in your 500........again, on a private airfield of course

Any gear change will cost at least a second, what about starting in second gear and just dial in a few more revs. I'm sure the Tiv has enough torque to pull cleanly and quickly from standstil. Must admit I havn't tried this myself, I love my clutch to much!!!

By the way, there seems to be an awful lot of disused airfields around.

You should be able to get to 60 in 2nd no worries. My 400 will do it without revving over 6k so a 500 should.

BTW, me and the missus did a very crude 0-60 test a few weeks back using the stopwatch on her phone! And came out at 5.6 i think. Take a few tenths off for reaction times and my shitty take off and it sounds about right! Cool!!

I managed 11.6 earlier in my mondeo

I'll see what the Chim can do

Ian, I've got a standard Griff 500 which I've had on the rolling road at Austec which showed bhp/torque curves etc and peak power for me was coming in at 5,100rpm. Way short of the rev limiter but once your past that your just wringing the engine's neck so to speak, time to change up in other words. Of course your Chim could be different and in reality very few cars are the same but that's just to give you an indication really. Getting to sixty in second shouldn't be a problem, god knows I do it enough!

Cheers - Chris

You need to chage gear when the torque for the gear you are in (e.g. 2nd) is about to dip below the torque you would get in 3rd. Or something like that.

As already stated by the time you get over 5.5k rpm power is waining and it's time to change.

Why stop at 60? Tell us the 0-100. KPH, on another one of those private airfields, office. Honest. 0-100 is a little more indicative. On a blat yesterday with Beano500's Griff, at the traffic light GP he didn't pull away from me until we got above 70 (usual conditions apply) and then it was pretty slight until I lifted off. Didn't like being that close to someone else at those speeds. I'm in a 4.5 Chim, so I reckon the difference will only really appear above 80.

mmm, I guess if I could change gear instantaneously (quickly) then making a change at 5000ish revs would be best, but its unlikely that any gain would offset the time it takes to change gear.

I'll have a play - on that private airfield!

If you don't care about the car, the optimum point to change from first to second is at about 5800 rpm and you would hold on to second as long as necessary to avoid the extra gear change. Getting the start right is critical though if you want to achieve a good time.

Assuming you do care about the car though, there is little performance benefit from taking it past 5000 rpm and past this point the wear on the engine builds up rapidly. The question is, how much wear and tear are you willing to cause to get numbers on a dial?

the way road testers do it is to just wrench the lever from first to second without using the clutch. brutal. and scary. so if you can't match the claimed figures this is why.

1. There is a rev limiter so dont be too afraid. I think it comes in just after 6000 in my Griff 500, I wasnt concentrating on the rev counter though. Surely going that fair up on the odd occasion is OK.

2. Surely changing up later keeps the car in the powerband for the next gear. Im not really sure if this applies much to 5.0 V8's though. Does it?

3. I did a 0-100 dash the other day (on my friends very long private driveway!) and looked at the speedo just after I'd changed from first to second. We were doing 60. Not sure of top speed in 2nd but its a lot lot more than 60!

4. In my '96 Griff 500 hand book it states
0-60 = 4.1
0-100 = 10.5
500HC = 340BHP, 350 lb.ft torque
Let us know what you get

But then again it also states the little red light by the window switch tells me when its icy out. Just when is the summer thaw coming? So far only changed to green occasionally and stays red the rest of the time!
Just to let you know that Im aware that not everything TVR say is true!

I was doing 0-60's the other day and managed a 4.6 sec in a Chim 500 - I reckon I could get this time down as I had quite a bit of wheel spin in both 1st and second gears did not need 3rd. Was going to do it again tonight but now I am working now. Will hopefully have time tomorrow and post the results.

The device I'm using is a

I havn't had a chance yet to try, but I will do tonight - I'll keep you posted, but to answer some of the other questions, I DO care about my car, so I think I'll use the clutch!.

I managed to get the mondeo down to 9.4 though

The gadget I got is the GTech Pro (check out ebay) or www.gtechpro.com unfortunately it won't tell me 0-100 it automatically registers a 0-60 and also BHP and 1/4 mile ET etc. but no 0-100.

I reckon it would be hard to achieve the paper figures, which I think is 4.3, also I think your right the 500 isn't any quicker over 60 than the 400 or 450, but its after 60 that makes the difference, Perhaps the BHP will be a better indication of the difference.

Either way it'll be a long night on that airfield
