Just borrowed 5.0 Grif while my 5.0 Chim in for service. Oh my god.....the Grif was amazing in low revs 1st and second gear wheel spins in the dry !! but then didnt seem to quite have the legs like mine has further up the rev band. Over all felt so much faster than mine. The Griff seemed to have a very light throttle and when you blipped the throttle would fly up the rev range and fall back again very quickly. My throttle needs a good prod and then doesn't drop the revs any where near as quick. Anyone any ideas ?

Does the Griff only have one return spring on the throttle? Would make the pedal easier to push. Leave two on BTW.

Maybe your car needs a visit to Mark Adams/Austec for a rechip of the fuelling EPROM. Made mine fly after this, plus made it much smoother all round. Also, your injectors might need a clean.

My Chimaera 500 spins up and down very quickly when I blip the throttle.

However, I can't get wheelspin in 2nd either. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough.

Surely depends on road temperature & surface. I once got wheelspin on a straight road in 3rd gear (after a fast 4th-3rd gearchange) when the temp was about 1 degree C. On the other hand, on a hot day on a good surface, I probably wouldn't get wheelspin in 2nd.

And replace them with sandbags to cut wheelspin? Is that what you are saying?

Seriously, I need to solve this problem. Car not overly lumpy below 2000 revs so wasnt sure I needed Mark Adams chip. Is there anything else I should be checking to improve my cars responsiveness and get it going up and down the rev range quickly ? (noted issue with spring and will check to see if there is 2 and will leave in situ) Thanks.

Maybe carbon plenum and trumpets? Rover V8 engines really need to "breathe" better to get the best out of them.

I drove my neighbours Griff 500 a few weeks back and found exactly the same thing compared to my Chim 400.

It sounds as if the Griff had a different cam giving more bottom end torque and less top end. Perhaps it had a lighter flywheel too, this would enable it to spin up and down faster off load.

I'd just like to point out that I don't actually seek wheelspin and rarely get it at all. I'd like to think this is down to a smooth driving style than an underperforming car.

Maybe 50 perhaps, if its exceptional 70, but not that much more. Could even be less, trust me

I believe that the TVR factory did indeed put a more powerful engine spec in the Griffith 500 than the Chimaera 500.

Apparently the sales brochures for late '90s Chimaera 500s referred to an option of an uprated 500 engine to the full Griffith spec.

If I recall correctly BigM has one of these TVR brochures citing a difference in engine specs between the Griffith 500 and Chimaera 500.

different gear box ? did they fit the rover and the t5 to the griff 500?

i know when i looked at 4ltr chimaera's the earlier cars "seemed" quicker in the lower gears, this was due to lower gearing in the rover box compaired to the late t5 ratios...

Except that according to the parts manual and other data I have ... they used the same engine spec.

To be honest the difference could be down to the fact that there are some good cars and and some not so good cars. Wheel spinning doesn';t mean more power as it is dependent on the tyres and suspension.

Steve - I think you're absolutely right. There has never been any major variation between 500 Chimaera and Griffith on the Rollers....
