Strange Temperature Guage

Any ideas on this one?

Coming back into London yesterday the temperature guage suddenly dropped by about 10 degrees. Normally it sits around 80-85. The dial fell to around 70-72, flutered back to 80 and then resolutely remained at 70.

I haven't had the chance to check her over yet but any suggestions to save me time/hassle would be appreciated. I was going to check the coolant levels, plus the oil, to ensure everything's alright there but after that I'm running out of ideas.

'sounds' like a sensor prob to me, but i'm no expert. ( one of whom should be along anytime now? )

air in the system can give very wayward behaviour.

Had a similar problem a couple of months back, Fernies diagnosed it as a firked temperature sender.

New one fitted everything back to normal and has been since.

Had a quick run today. Everything seemed normal. I think it needs a longer run to check. I need to get out and check the coolant too. Thanks for the ideas. If it comes back I'll have to book it in somewhere.

I had this when I bought my Chim. Did it for the 4-month run up to it's first service with me, then 2 weeks before, it started working! Typical.

Had the sender unit replaced anyway - all has been fine since. Only costs about £30 for the part.

Suggest you get it fixed before the summer really gets here - mine was on the blink through most of last years heat wave. Certainly makes journeys through London more of a lottery.

(Having said that - never once did the car have an overheating problem)
