How does the rain solve my heavy steering?

I have noticed that after a good downpoor (Little chim lives outside) the steering becomes much lighter and feels like driving a different car. When its been dry for a while the steering can gets very heavy.

I have just stopped (hopefully!) a water leak which comes in from a point close to the steering colomn (Linked)


ANy ideas?

Think of the wet situation as just somewhere between dry and icy on the friction curve together with cool rubber.

Are your steering column u/j's clean and greased, if they are clogged with dirt the rainwater could free them temporarily and lighten the steering

Water in the very sort term could be lubricating rubbers (ooh err) and plastics bushes, washers etc.

Like I say lubricate in the VERY short term.

Perhaps a good all round lubrication with grease would be a better long-term solution.
