Track days at Goodwood
Discussion
Noticed that you can do track days at Goodwood, but there's a 98db limit. Anyone ran a stock 400 there? Get an exhaust reading?
Anyone doing any others in SE England? Going to do Brands a couple of times this year. Might do Snett, Goodwood, Lydden Hill and thinking about going to France for a couple too.

Yes i ran a standard 400 there May last year. I think the limit is 105 (according to the green sticker on my windscreen) mine came in at 101.
Was my first track day and i had a fantastic time! There is not much run off, so you just have to build your speed up slowly. (apologies if you have done this before!)I did upgrade my brakes afterwards so it may be an expensive day! I'm definately going again!
Have fun!

Think the limit is 104dB on loud days (more expensive and limited number of cars on track at any one time) and 98dB normally. I read 114dB. I failed.
How standard (or otherwise!) is yours?Mine doesn't sound that loud to me - for a V8 Tiv - but being fully decatted it can't be that quiet. Maybe I'm just going deaf.
My 400 is standard, with all the cats, and was trackday noise tested at 103dB initially, but after verrrrry gently increasing the revs it was checked again and scraped in at 98dB. The scrutineer actually checked it 4 times in a row, the first 3 were 100db+, with 98 on the final attempt. It was a 100dB limit; I still don't know if he was being 'generous' or not

Fairly standard, pre-cats removed (doesn't increase exhaust noise, just engine bay chitter) and sleaved silencers. Believe it or not, it nudged 120dB at Goodwood when I floored it, but having brought it back to work we measured it at the correct revs vs. power curve that you do for an IVA and we recorded 109dB @ 4200rpm and 114dB peak. 104dB came around low down, somewhere like 2500rpm.Mine doesn't sound that loud to me - for a V8 Tiv - but being fully decatted it can't be that quiet. those sleeved silencers aren't helping then
.
Love loud exhausts, but no point having a quickish car and not being able to do track days IMHO. it must be really annoying getting turned away too. Saw a guy at brands in a westfield get turned away once - engine popped and banged - no way was he getting on track...

I purchased some track day silencers, can i use them on the road because it stops the drone noise for long trips on the motorway..i allso stick them in when i start the car in the garage stops the neighbours moaning..

Did Brands yesterday.
Passed easily at 95db with a standard exhuast and decat manifolds.
The secret is to raise the revs very slowly and don't let it go above 4500 rpm.
That is easier said then done as mine for example must come on cam then and the revs rise further at that speed without any throttle input, you actually have to back of slowly as the revs rise.
Out of about recent 25 T/D's, it has only failed twice and I reckon that was driver error in my earlier days

Doesn't bother me much actually, I have no track day experience and doing my first one in the Chim would probably end up in a broken Chim! I'll stick to little hatchbacks for my first one, they seem to be quicker point to point anyway, and they're quiet

The noise makes up for it out in the countryside with the roof down!
Goodwood check at 3/4 max rpm and not 2/3 and those few hundred revs will make a big difference.
98 @ 4000 is around 101 at 4500... so it would be a fail.
There are also track side monitors that measure drive by. I have seen cars that have squeezed through the noise test then get banned for failing the drive by. It is about the strictest track in the country.
The loud days are 105 and only 5 cars are allowed on the track at any one time. The TVR day is a 98db to allow 10 cars on track.

Standard 4l chim static 4.500rpm test predictions?
Best to take a silencer anyway?
Going combe end of the month.
Completely standard, no meddling with the exhaust? Then about 95-97 dB(A). Best to take a silencer anyway?

My fully decatted 5 litre Chimaera was about bang on the limit two years ago at Castle Combe, so you should be fine. I seem to remember it was 100 dB(A), but your joining instructions should tell you that info.
Before you go, practice your exam technique - sit in the car at home and gently increase the revs to hit 4500 on the nose every time without going over.
Also, don't volunteer that your noise test level is 4500 rpm. They should ask you what your rev limit is.
On a Chimaera the answer to that is 6,000 - don't get clever and don't volunteer to do the maths for them - you'd be surprised how many noise testers, who, when told your rev limit is 6,000, ask you to rev to 4000!
Don't argue!!!! Do as you are told. Unless they are suggesting more then 4500.
Arrive at the noise test with the engine warm, not cold, and be pleasant.
Remember, they are trying to pass you, not fail you.
It's Wiltshire County Council who set the rules, not Castle Combe Race Track.
And they generally won't tell you what your noise reading was unless you ask - but it is essential information if you want to do places like Thruxton. So ask.
Have you got a set of bolt on cans? They do drop the noise level by about 5 dB, more particularly, they make it more mellow, which goes down well with noise testers. They also show you are trying to comply.
Do you live near any of the regular track day tracks? Most will test your car for you for free if you just phone them and arrange to drop in at a mutually convenient time.
