Is this for the window frame? I use Solvol, I'm sure Brasso would be OK too. In fact I've had to resort to wet and dry when I left them for a while and they furred up a bit. I worked down to 1200 wet and dry with very soapy water, then polished up with Solvol; good as new. So Brasso shouldn't do any damage!

I'm please someone has asked this - I have been meaning to do mine for ages but not got round to it . They look aweful so I will have to pop out and get some autosol/solvol on my way back from work. Should help keep me out the pub this afternoon.

Be careful with Autosol, it is very aggressive cleaner. However, here's a tip from an old MG owner I know who has kept his original chrome bumpers spotless for the last 25 years.

1. Autosol
2. Spray WD40 on a soft cloth and wipe over
3. Wash
4. Wipe over with WD40
etc...

Autosol maybe every 6 months if it needs it...

Ooer, yes, I should have mentioned that before I started rattling on about wet and dry. I'm now imagining people attacking chrome with wet and dry - doesn't bear thinking about!

Anyone know of a coating to stop the ally oxidising again after polishing? The shine never seems to last more than a week before dulling.

Anodising! Specialist treatment, parts have to be dipped.

Best just to keep polishing.

Frosts do some spray on coating for bare metal; haven't tried it myself though. Bike mags used to advertise Clear Plastic Coating - probably similar stuff. Didn't use that either. I guess I just like polishing! Gets me out of the house!

I have spent a long time polishing alloy for motorcycles, cars etc.. as a finish after polishing try a good quality car wax, it removes any additional metal polish & seems to seal the alloy from oxidisation for a little longer.
