Exhaust upgrade question

Trying to work out why someone's car was quieter than mine for same upgrade (in fact they had more done...)

My car: 4 litre M reg, perforated exhaust removed and normal pipe put in place. Sounds quite loud (115dB at 4500rpm @ goodwood), easy to make it pop and crackle

Other car: 5 litre P reg, as per my upgrade but also precats removed. Sounds slightly quieter and was a real job to get a muffled pop out of it.

How's this happen then?

I think the 5 litres have a much lower frequency sound due to the increased capacity, my 4.0 has a modded exhaust and it sounds very metallic, like an american V8.

Yours probably has an air leak in the exhaust system.

but it's always sounded like that and has passed every MOT since the change!

The engine specs are very different, the early 4.0L had very different cam, also the fueling map will be different, as peter said the condition of the exhaust will also play a part, curiously though the 4.0L engine will normally be louder/ crisper though.

Yes, it's definitely louder/crisper... rawer sound (is that grammatically correct?).

However, the owner of said quiet 5 litre Chimaera has heard a Griffith 500 which did the crackle/popping thing with ease... any thoughts? (He wasn't sure of model year thought.)

Yes, my 400 was quite alot louder than the 500, both having standard set ups. The 500 has no pre-cats and still is quieter than the 400!

500 Griffs always seem to sound much louder than mine too.

i am thinking of modding my exhaust in my 4.0 chim.
is there anyone anybody can recommend in the peterborough area?? there always seems to be bugger all near here!! any idea on costs?
