Starter Motor? dead Battery? Fuse?

Hope someone out there can help me out once again.

I seem to be having probelms starting my Chim, everything has been working fine until about 2 hours ago came to start her up and totally dead not even turning over the only thing I could manage was electric windows and doors, even the dashboard (Oil / charge)lights never came on. I could just hear electric connection noises coming from passenger footwell area.

Went to jump start and no problems started straight away, drove home (the long way good hour or so)no lights came on indicating low charge everything seemed Ok.

Got home turned over and nothing.

Hope someone can help me out, I'll check the big fuse in the morning is this located in the footwell?

I'm getting this on my Griff at the moment. I had put it down to a damaged wire from the starter switch but by fluke yesterday I traced it back a bit further.

Instead of being the wire it is the switch itself - if I sit and hold the key fully turned as if to start nothing would happen. Leave it for about 30 seconds and possibly twisting the switch a couple of times and suddenly everything sprung to life.

I was ready to run a replacement wire all the way to the starter from the switch (not easy to follow!) but now it is just the ignition switch itself which is something of a relief. Ironically I used to have similar problems with Vauxhalls so it really shouldn't have come as a great suprise...

I've just had recovery out to take a look as it is my only car, and it seems that the battery is on its way out, as it is definately taking a charge, but when I turn the engine off, I don't get the slightest indication that the starter is trying to turn over.

Anybody got any idea of cost of a new battery?

Simon thanks for that I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being ripped off, I've had prices ranging from £40 - £100 .

But having read the bible, I shouldn't really go for anything less than 650 amps which I've managed to find for £60.

Has anyone ever used less than this? As most seem to be 510 amps.

God I've turned into a battery spod .

I can vouch for the Varta type 96 reverse, got mine from Manbat in Chesterfield, its been very good. 650CCA, terminals in the right places and fits the battery box like it was made for it.

Thanks for that I managed to pick one up for 60 quid yesterday. Even swopping the batteries over wasn't as difficult as I thought it could be, you do have to mark the floor for repostioning the box though.
