Looking forward to my first Chatsworth, this morning as i was going down my drive the o/s front shock absorber / damper snapped and the spring hit my steering rack turret and other pipework causing leaks of 2 different types of fluid. As I use a shared drive with 12 other people I rallied my bosses round to move my P&J on to the road until I could get my TVR mechanic to do a temporary repair.
When we went to the car a neighbour from across the road had reversed straight in to the car causing great damage, new door needed, door glass, carbon fibre mirror and more.
I am pi--ed off and have had a s--t day.
Will not at the moment say who the manufacturer is as I was appalled by the owner of the companies attitude as he said he would either repair or replace the part and that consequential damage was not covered by them.
A full set were installed 8 months ago and the car has done just short of a 1000 miles.
Before it goes back to him it has been inspected by a qualified engineer today and will be looked at a Chartered Engineer next week. Solicitors I will involve as well as he did not seem bothered that I could be dead as a result of this part breaking.

Sorry to hear of all that. Not a good day at all! You haven't been round smashing up mirrors have you?

My sympathies Malcolm.

No one deserves a day like that.

You are responsible for saving a lot of TVR's & returning them to their former beauty so if anyone can fix it, you can.

Hope you get it sorted quickly so you can enjoy the car for the summer.

Best regards, Dave (Starmist Crimson Chimaera with perfect paint by Malcolm at S&D)

Sorry to hear that, bad day indeed.
Taking something positive from it though, at least it snapped on your drive.
Had it snapped whilst you were cornering or at high speed it could have been you and other road users that was damaged.
Hope you get it all sorted swiftly.
Cheers.

That is really terrible, just don't want to think about what could have happened on the open road. But someone crashed into your car as well!!! That is unbelievable. I was think about changing the springs/dampers on my Chim next year and don't want to risk that sort of thing happening. Might leave the Bilsteins on there. What was the make? Can you PM me?

Can the make not be posted if only for safety reasons. If these are new and failing people need to know.

Shock absorber failure, due in the main to piston rod fracture, seems to be happening on a regular basis on Chimaeras for some reason. I haven't seen similar failures being reported on the Griffith forum, given that the suspension is more or less the same for both models, why is the Chimaera more prone to this problem? Perhaps it could be that there are more of them.

Malcolm, good luck with your 'claim' against the manufacturer.

Sorry due to the companies attitude towards this I have been to see my solicitor who has advised me not to say anything as if an amicable solution cannot be found we will be going to court.
I can however say that the company went on to blame potholes and TVR build quality and tolerences of the position of the shocker mounting bracket on the chassis. Which I know is in the right place.
Yet this company sell their after market product for TVR.
I have been in the motor trade for 35 years and I work alongside qualified engineers and designers that like me are all ex TVR staff and where I work now vehicles are designed and built from scratch.
This company think that they can use their terms and conditions and warranty info to get rid of problems,

not this one

Wasn't there a similar thread a year or so ago? Several people experienced similar problems, all one brand?

Gaz Gold were not fitted but might be soon. How can a shocker manufacturer think that they can either repair or replace 1 shocker that has snapped.
What about the other 3, am I being unreasonable in wanting all 4 replaced, preferably with a different make as 1 snapping does not fill me with confidence.
And other damage done I would like that repairing as well,
what are your opinions on this.

For what it is worth I think you have every reason to want the things removed at their expense, how could you ever have any confidence driving the car with them fitted after what happened. I don't know much about these things but sale of goods act, items sold being fit for purpose etc etc!

I'd be asking for the same, plus to cover any other costs such as hire car etc.. Until it's sorted.
I'm not a big fan of insurance companies but no doubt the manufacture and fitters will have insurance to cover these types of incidents although will no doubt spend months arguing over who's at fault.
In a ideal world you'd also get some compensation for all the inconvenience.

Good luck!!!

John Ravenscroft who designed most of the chim but all of its chassis called in today and I asked him should a shocker snap, and his answer was a straight no.
When I told him he was basically being blamed for it breaking by the manufacturer of the shocker, or it could have been a pothole, John was not very impressed.

I had many years arguing the toss on this problem (not TVR but a shock absorber piston rod fracture), and it came down to a question of metallurgy, fit for purpose, sale of goods, and many expert witnesses. In my case I was travelling at speed when failure occurred. If there is a problem with this brand of shock absorber and its use on TVRs people out there need to know about it.

over the last 10 years of racing, i've seen plenty of crashes, where dampers have been damaged, usually snapping off the top or bottom mount, but I've never seen a piston snap, bent yes but not snap.

where did the piston break?
