Will a T series engine fit into a MGB?
Discussion
I have loved the shape of the MGB roadster since long before I was old enough to drive (I am now 37!)
I keep looking at them in the classifieds and very seriously considered one last time I changed my car. I didn't buy one though as at the moment I don't have a garage which I would prefer.
However, having previously owned a Rover 600Ti for 5 years, I couldn't help but wonder if a T series turbo would drop into a B. I know the T series engine can trace it lineage from the O series and the M series, but i dont know if the block is cast to mount it longitudinally.
Clearly the brakes, suspension and gearbox would all have to be uprated, but what a great car it would be to have 200bhp and modern engine management.
Does anybody know if this has been done before?

Yes. Quite a common conversion which works well. Have looked at doing it my self but as i want to keep my MGB for a long long time i think it could be worth considering a more future proof engine. I can imagine parts for em will become quite hard to come by in 10 plus years.
Why not look into a k series or a zetec. Both of which are a bit more complicated but you will never be short of parts.
Check out this site for more info on T and k series transplants.

Thanks for the offer lucebayjack I appreciate it. It will be a while before I can consider going ahead with it so I will not take you up on it at the moment though. One other question, if the engine is swapped for a T series, would the car then become a Q plate or will it retain its original reg? I ask because I would want a pre 1973 model to stick two fingers up to the tax man and would be a bit miffed if I swapped the engine and then had to start paying road tax!!

It has been done several times. topically and timely, someone over on Mg-Rover.org has started a tasty T16 Turbo MGB GT Project here :~I keep looking at them in the classifieds and very seriously considered one last time I changed my car. An understressed 200ps in a featherweight MGB has some appeal does it not.
..
Rich,
Changing the engine will not have any effect on the registration docs that require you to have a Q plate. It will retain whatever plate it had originally.
Don't forget that the tax on a B is only £250 odd for a year. The premium that pre-73 cars attract (up to another grand) means that you shouldn't discount pre-75 chrome bumpered cars, or lowered chrome bumper conversions.
I'm looking to see if the V6 from the later MG Z models will fit in my B when the engine next needs rebuilt....prefer a V6 snarl to a 4 cyl turbo.
