I have been in the habit of doing a clutchless upchange. I have been advised that using the clutch is much nicer to the g'box. On my nicely rebuilt engine and box, I am keen to be nice to it.

However, I am struggling to get the timing right. If I dip the clutch too quickly after getting off the gas, the revs rise and if I leave it too long to dip the clutch, it is very hard to make smooth.

Anyone else had this or am I just a crap driver?

Clutchless up changes won't cause any damage to the gearbox if you do them right smile If you have a notch gearbox then you might "have" to use the clutch but ZZR box isn't to bad imho. As for technique you just lift the throttle and grab a gear. One mistake I used to make was not lifting my foot completely clear of the peddle so I still have some power on. This caused a really horrible change. Next time you are out make a point of moving your foot away from the throttle pedal and see if the changes improve

yep, when I am calm and together, the changes are great. Gentle pressure on the lever and change gear with the right foot - lift off.

When I am going for it or making a cockup, the timing goes wrong and it's notchy. Hence trying to use the clutch!
