I made a post on here a while back as I wanted an XJ6/12. After seeing many and none being right, I've decided it's going to be a long term search and that I want a Series 1. Preferably tax free, probably going to be a 6 as I don't think OH would be too impressed if I came home with 12 cylnders worth of waft-mobile .... wink

At the moment I'm not looking too hard as I have a nice P6 as my daily.

Seriously, though - where on earth do I find a nice one? Are there any Jaguar specific websites out there?

I take it you have looked in the Jaguar World Monthly magazine
and are a member of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club www.jec.org.uk

There members only magazine have adverts many of them for XJ6/12 S1 S2 & S3

Series 1's are a good choice. Build quality took a distinct nose dive with the series 2 - and I don't mean just by the fact it was a BL product.

There were a couple of decent looking ones going on ebay not so long since, but as with any XJ6, check ANY you go to see for the rust bug.

Being into my classics I'm rather good at checking for rot!

I often look on car and classic and eBay. I don't know Jaguar world monthly? I'm not a member of the JEC as I don't own a Jag as yet.

I think I'll be keeping my P6 until the winter, but theres about £2K profit to be made as I got it very, very cheap and it's in beautiful condition!

I do want a Series 1 though or a 420 (but I don't think I can realistically afford one) - I'd be looking up to £6K. Are there any Jaguar specific forums for the older models?

I subscribe to Jaguar World Monthly. The June 2011 edition plopped on my doormat today. It includes an article by an owner of an S1 XJ12. In the Cars for Sale section there's a few S1s for sale. Maybe you should get a copy (I've seen the magazine on sale at WHS for example)and have a browse.

£6k will get you a really good one! I paid £850 for mine about a year ago... there are bargains out there if you look hard. If I'd not started a daft engine conversion on my S1 you could have had a look/drive of mine as your profile says you're in Derbyshire too.

JEC local groups in Chesterfield area, and Sheffield, both are pretty friendly. You don't have to have a Jaguar to join, and the magazine is usually good with classified ads for cars.

Jaguar World Monthly (the magazine has it's own forum area)
Jag-lovers

Edited due to me being a plank. S1 cost wasn't £600 as I stated, that was the S3 that I replaced it with. D'oh.

What about an original S-Type?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/classiccars/74...

Mark 2 front with XJ back, sort of.

Really enjoyed reading that article actually smile Made me smile! I'm only 22 so grew up around XJ40's rather than the earlier stuff and you were either "posh" (well as posh as you could be in a small town state school) or "dodgy" if you parents drove a Jag!

I'm not sure on an S-type - I don't like the Mk.2 front end!

It would have to be lovely for me to spend £6K though, as I've have to sell the Porsche and the P6 before "the man of the house" would let me indulge! wink

What did you get for £850 if you don't mind me asking? I'm very concerned about rot, you see! Whereabouts in Derbyshire are you? I'm between Alfreton and Chesterfield.

ETA - when is the JEC meet in Chesterfield? smile

420s tend to be the cheapest of the 60s Jags.
They are basically an S-Type with the front-end styling of the Mk10/420G (The 420 and 420G are different cars, a 420G is the newer name of the Mk10).

Funny how the pricing has inverted since period. Mk2s are now the most valuable of the saloons where they were the cheapest when new.

In terms of forums for the older Jags you can try jag-lovers, I hang around in the XK group (original XKs with the XK engine not some funny V8 thing biglaugh )

I'm in Tupton on the A61. The local JEC guys meet at the Nettle Inn near Ashover on the second monday of every month. I'm not sure about the South Yorkshire region now, as I haven't been up that way for a while.

I was lucky. I got a 1973 2.8 with the manual/overdrive gearbox. It wasn't/isn't the smartest car in the world, as it was a banger track refugee, but it passed a test with little to no effort and was solid. This is it on the ferry to Le Mans last year:

There are a few Series 1 come up every now and again, there's a couple on ebay now. The local banger lads usually know where to lay their hands on a few at any given time too.

Rich

Rich - you're only just up the road from me! I'm in Shirland. smile I think I may have seen your series 1 in tesco clay cross back in the winter. smile I think I was either in the Porsche or the MGB GT V8.

I may have to come along to this meet.

Taken from my post in best smoker barges, OK, OK it's a series 2 but it's so gorgeous that I don't *really* care! -

Today I give you:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

If only I'd seen this coming, if only I'd not gone and bought more cars, I need it and OH won't let me frown OK he has a point, we've got four cars, no space, not really enough money to buy it but it's breaking my heart to leave it, oh please don't sell, please let some knobber go and reject you and I'll come and find you when something has sold. You know you want me as your new friend, I certainly want you! biggrin

More than likely you did see me; winter doesn't mean the toys go away, it just means the heater has to work! I'm in a black Series 3 XJ6 (ex Practical Classics car) now while the Series 1 gets rebuilt.

Series 2's are pretty. I've had a coupe and a couple of Series 2 saloons. They're a bit hit and miss in the build quality but a nice car.

Rich

Does look nice, think of the fun you'd have smoking hot hatches away from the lights too.

Very true. smile

We now need a bit more space on the drive for the money earners (classic trade cars!) so ... I've decided that the Porsche and the P6 (yes, only just bought it but over £1000 profit to be made) will be on their way soon and I'm looking for a Jaguar. smile

Will still have a sports car too so I fancy something much bigger, with plenty of leather and wood!

The search is (sort of) on, biggrin

Rich - will you be going to the next JEC meet? I may come along to it. smile

The series 2 is my favourite of the Series cars - I think they could be the best looking saloon car ever made (and that is coming from a real XJ40 enthusiast biggrin )

The Series 1 has a certain purity though and is the more aggressive looking car. Contraversially, I'm not particularly keen on the Series 3; I don't like the roofline at all. I find my XJ40 far more attractive than the S3!! I'll run away and hide now... biglaugh

I'll be up there at the meet, I'm always there! There's usually a couple of E-types and a lot of the new stuff.

I used to like the Series 2 the best, but since having a Series 1 I've changed my mind. The Series 3 is still a nice car but hampered by the stupid 3 speed automatic and short back axle. It should have been given the running gear from the XJ40, which was tested in the Series 2! I hate the rear roofline, but then again that's not a view of the car I have often.

Whatever you do avoid the 2.8 engined cars. Their reputation for holing pistons isn't a myth; I found out the hard way..

Balls... just checked the calendar, and I won't be at the next JEC meet, as I'll be on my way back from Le Mans.
