Due to a change of circumstances I could really do with a car with four seats and a decent boot. I've been really happy with my XKR 5.0 so I've been thinking about trading it for an XFR, if I can find an ex-demo in the right colour. Actually I've already spotted one at a dealer in Chichester but it only has 100 miles on it and is more than I want to pay, so I can wait for another.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone has a lot of experience of both cars so can make a useful comparison. The XFR is heavier which will affect performance and economy slightly, but is it likely to be noticeable? I've only managed 18.9 mpg anyway in the XKR. I'm thinking the ride quality will be similar, if not marginally better due to the heavier body, but the handling may suffer a bit. Any thoughts?

I've only driven an XKR 5.0 at a jaguar day so don't have much experience to compare with my XFR but I didn't notice any difference in performance and actually preferred the driving position and (more stable?) feel of the XFR.
The exhaust in the XKR is meant to be slightly louder but I could hardly notice the difference - I've now got a Spires sports exhaust which sorts that out anyway
The only advantage the XKR has in my mind is in the looks deparment, but the XFR is hardly ugly (I still get lots of comments saying what a beautiful car) and the extra praticallity is very useful - essential if you have kids.
Economy and other running costs will be very similar. XKR will hold its value better but XFR is cheaper in the first place.
Interested to see what you think if you get a test drive.

I can vouch for the fact that I found the XFR as much fun if not more (cause it's a saloon!) than the XKR. Very comfy place to be, more so than the XKR, the seats are top. It feels sooo solid and the ride is better due to the weight. No qualms about swapping in my book

I got the chance to chuck them both round Thruxton on a Jaguar day, I preferred the XFR, very poised at speed with a more compliant ride than the XKR, which I found very bumpy and a bit cramped.

Aside the plaque you can build it yourself with the options list for the same money. It was basically used to introduced new options to the Market place.

The new XFR has just been launched and is available to order.

As September gets nearer the deals may get better.

Would it be devious to go into a dealer expressing interest in a new XFR if they have a 100 in stock, perhaps they would have more incentive to sell the immediate stock at a good price.

I think the facelift will probably have an effect on the nearly new prices at dealers, and there might be a deal to be had. The only problem is that I saw a facelifted XFR on the M40 today, and it looked great, so actually I might prefer a new one smile I'm going to keep an eye on the price of a couple of used ones though to see what movement occurs.

Early 2004 when I bought my S-Type a facelift had just been announced. List price for the "superceded" JMD demonstrator with 14 miles on it (never customer driven) with the extras it had was £39,500. I was offered it for £30,000 and got it for £28,500 cash. Around 25% off list. So deals can be done.

Well, I've done a deal on a stunning black 60 plate XFR with 1400 miles and a great spec, which I will be collecting on Wednesday. More than £20K less than it cost new a few months ago - ouch for someone. I'll miss the XKR but I'm pretty excited about the XFR now smile I will add pics when I have some.

You just can't beat black and ivory - sweet. Interested to see how you find it after the XKR.
So what options do you have?
