Looking for my next Jaguar... possibly XJS
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I'm a long-time Jaguar owner. I have had about ten Jaguar XJ-series cars since my first car.
It started like this:
2001 Jaguar XJR which I got for my 17th birthday...
and then a few more in chronological order:
1987 Daimler Double Six 5.3 Series 3
1986 Jaguar XJ6 4.2litre
1988 Jaguar XJ6 3.6litre xj40
1981 Jaguar V12 Vanden Plas Series 3 (this one had a high compression engine, pre-HE)
1991 Jaguar XJ6 4litre xj40
1973 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 Series 1
1989 Jaguar V12 Vanden Plas Series 3
2006 Jaguar XJ8 - the only one which I still have.
1985 Jaguar V12 Vanden Plas Series 3
So, now I've decided to settle in the UK. I have more or less made the decision not to ship my 2006 Jaguar XJ8 over to the UK (it is LHD after all).
I'm off to find a Jaguar XJS.
I'd prefer the facelifted car 1994-1996, and a fixed head coupe. Would rather have an automatic as I get stuck in traffic quite a lot. I have no preference as to 4litre or 6litre though.
I would love to have a Lynx Eventer, but I think it may be out of my price range at the moment. My budget is 5000 pounds.
Would experienced owners please let me know the important bits to look for?
particularly rust issues!
Thanks very much!
M.P.

I'll get some details today and pass them on to you
He is just allong the M4 near Reading
Rust issues.
The turrets along the boot lid.
Enginebay on susupension strut mountings difficult to see with air box in the way take a torch.
Sills inside front and rear wheel arches
bottom of wings.
rear quarter Panels near lights and where wing joins sills.
REALLY IMPORTANT windscreen area around the scuttle any rust showing leave well alone.
Floorpans.
For £5k the car shouldnt really have much rust.
mechanically if they drive ok they are normally fine.
Aircon arent great. Headlining drops.
I have a 6.0l and its wonderful to drive a real joy and an experience to have one day.
ButI have laso had the 4.0l on a 96 and its super smooth to.
£5k should get you a good one if you take your time.
A low mileage cars isnt necessarily an advantage. A good used but well serviced higher mileage is not a problem.

Spoke the the owner this morningIt's a 1996 Diamond Celebration model V12 in verry good condition, only 80,000 miles
Black coupe with cream interior. He's looking at twice your budget though
He does also have a 4Lt but that is with a manual transmision though
