I recently bought a 2005 model XKR, having previously owned an XK8. I am finding the suspension harsh and choppy. Car only done 40k miles. Could I fit XK8 dampers to soften it up a bit? Never had a problem with the XK8.

Something is not right here. This is not a harshly suspended car. You need someone who knows what they are about, to tell you. Is the CATS working? Has somebody already fitted sports springs and lowered the suspension. Either here or on XKEC forum, someone will be able to help, but they are going to have to look at it.

Sounds like a problem with the CATS.

Or did the XK8 have 17" or 18" wheels
And the XKR have 20"

The profile of the 20" are 35% front and 30% rears makes a big differance when the 18" are 45%

You dont say whether convertible or coupe.

Sometimes my 05 R convertible gives the impression the suspension has gone solid.

The technician at the dealership says the bumpy jiggly ride of the X100 XKR is normal . certainly means that it is not his favourite Jag.

Some Coupes have a handling/ sport suspension option (probably means even firmer and lower. You can check the spec from the VIN, a dealer may help you with this or perhaps Jag customer services.

I have a feeling that is the way it is. I went from XJ's to XKR, it was a contrast, but I expected it.

I agree, the 20"s look fab but the 18"s are the better wheel for the car.

Only thing I can suggest is emigrate to Germany where the roads are better.

I don't think that is a fair assessment. I have driven a few, and had one way back in the good old pre-crunch days, and though the feeling is obviously more vintage than the latest generation of Jags, it is a smooth car. If you are crashing around there is definately something wrong. Would it be rude to suggest that your guy just couldn't fix it? Not unknown in these plug in the diagnostic and change the widget days. If the shock absorbers are not right, and they can go,I believe in CATS equipped cars more than others, it is like driving around with a billygoat in the boot.

Also - dump the 20" Detroits and get a set of 18" Double Fives.

I agree with that, even with my mods I still use Double 5's with Toyo T1-R's

The technician drives lots of Jags, at a popular main dealer. His comments were 'relative' to the ride of other Jags.

His favourite all round car is the XJ 350 with a diesel engine.

He commented on how the current generation of XJ's, XF's and XK's have moved on radically from a technical viewpoint from the previous generation. Having driven most of them I agree. But, I feel from an aesthetic viewpoint the new gen Jags make the likes of my 05 XKR and previous XJ's look good.

Matter of opinion-having had 2005 XKR 4.2 S convertible and now have 5.0litre XKR Convertible I also thought the same but now much prefer looks of later model also much better when hood down-ride and handling in different league

I'm sure you are right, Ron, but that 4.2-S XKR of yours, Copper Black, Ivory and Burr Elm if I'm not mistaken lick which I remember vividly but couldn't afford when you had it up for sale would have had most interested onlookers creaming themselves while the XK 5.0 won't.

I think that the XK is impressive, particularly as a coupe, and that the XF is a quantum leap forward - a brilliant car in every respect - but I am afraid that try as I might, I just don't 'get' the new XJ. From behind the wheel, and to drive, wonderful, but looks matter, and I thought Jag learned that with the XJ-S. Is it just me? The nose is dramatic, but the rest of the car just tags on behind, looking too narrow, and with a very distinguished tail, to be sure, but one that looks as if it was designed for another car. Where is the 'stance' that Ian Callum went on about?

I would rather order an X358 new to be honest, and that just isn't right.

I agree my 4.2S was great and my wife has never forgiven me for selling but unfortunately a pal bought a 5.0 ltr XKR and as a car to drive it was so impressive I could not resist. The 4.2S was very good and better in some ways particularly boot room but that is balanced out by better hood on later model.Fortunatley I sold the car to a really nice couple who I am sure are still enjoying car as much as I did- I do tend to move on after about 2-3 years anyway and think that Jaguars at moment offer really good value and are equal to most cars on the road.I have also bought XF 3.s Portfolio for my daily car and again really impressed-only car I ever kept longer was my Chimaera 4.5 which I kept for six years just because it was a great car and I covered 40000 almost trouble free miles in that-hopefully 5.0Litre XKR will be with me as long

No, it's not just you. I'm still not a fan of the new XJ's looks. In my view, they look bulbous at the rear; there was a photo in Car magazine a while ago, taken from behind, which showed their new XJ alongside a Series 111. What a difference in size.

The XK coupe looks good, although I've got mixed views about the front of the XKR-S; it might just have been the colour of the blue one I looked closely at at Goodwood. IMHO, of course smile

I sold my 2007 XKR convertible a few months ago because my ageing back could no longer hack the firm ride and unyielding seats. Since then I've been knocking around in a small 4x4 trying to find a replacement car with more cushion in the seats and more forgiveness in the suspension. The only Jag with halfway decent seats (in my terms) is the XF but I want something a bit nicer. I thought I would have to switch to Mercedes, eg CL500, but I spent an afternoon sitting in every model in the local showroom and the seats are all as firm as the XKR so I didn't get as far as testing the ride. Now thinking about a Bentley GTC which has a decent ride at the softest setting but still not the soft seats my back needs. Hope I don't end up with a Lexus.

A bit nicer than an XF?!!!

Fill your hand you SOB!

I wouldn't drive one of the glorified taxis to which you refer if you paid me.

I am also a bit surprised that you found the XK suspension too hard. A lot of people spend considerable time and money trying to make it harder.
