So, my recently acquired XJR has a couple of niggles to sort out, one of which being the cruise control not working.

When you press the button next to the gear lever, it doesn't light up. So either the switch is dead, or the bulb doesn't work. If you press the Set button with the switch in the correct position, it doesn't hold the speed.

So, I'm looking at replacing the button as a first step. How else can I troubleshoot this?

Other things to be sorted:

- shake through the steering wheel between 65-80mph
- need to replace the cigarette lighter socket - how is it removed?

Cheers!

Why do you need to replace the cigarette lighter socket - is it dead and could this be a clue as to why your cc does not work?

Wheel wobble especially on larger rims is a XJ problem. If it does it all the time at certain speeds suspect out of balance or buckled wheels, flatspotted or deteriorating tyres or possibly some wear in the suspension.
If it only does it on gentle cornering at those speeds and the steering goes oddly light then I'd suspect a buckled wheel on which ever side of the car is on the outside of the corner.

Swap wheels front to rear and see if it changes. If it does then lift each suspect wheel off the ground and turn it looking and feeling carefully for any deformtion in the tyre. If the tyres look OK then have the wheels rebalanced - ask for the wheels to be checked for true at the same time.

If swapping and balancing doesn't make any difference then at least two of all four wheels are out of true or you have have faulty tyres or a potential problem with suspension components. You could try substituing the spare if you have a proper wheel and not a spacesaver to try to narrow the problem down a bit

If you only get the wheel wobble under light or medium braking at almost any speed then chances are the front discs are warped and need replacing.

The wheel wobble is only between 65-80mph when not breaking. Tyres look fine, so will get the wheels balanced next.

Cigarette lighter has been caked in old cigar. I've tried cleaning it up as best I can, but a) it still smells, and b) some of it is properly baked on. I want to remove the centre console trim to get rid of an old carphone kit, so thought it might be easier to replace the lighter socket at the same time.

(So, how does one remove the big trim on the centre console? The wood part between ashtray and stereo).

I thing the the CC button works in the “out” position and not the “in” position. If that makes sense? If the bulb dose not work it would be hard to spot this.

Try the set button with it pressed “out”

Yes, like the Sport button it works when raised.

However, in my case it doesn't work in either position wink

That's called the ski slope.

This is from memory - treat with caution and take your time

Disconnect the battery
Remove the centre console lid and black inner liner
Remove the gear knob by screwing anti clockwise - might be tight so grip shaft with a pair of soft jawed grips
Ease a piece of string under each corner of the J gate surround and lift it up in even steps until it comes off
Reach through the centre console hole under the ashtray and unscrew a big plastic wing nut at the back of the ski slope
Gently - the veneer will crack if you're rough - ease the back of the ski slope horizontaly towards the rear of the car and at the same time guide the front top down to free the two retaining lugs and over the heating control panel.

I think that's it. HTH
