changing rear shocks on a 99 XJ8
Discussion
It seems the time has come. I have checked the bushes and all appear ok but the banging and rattling persists. I'm told by a friend who has done the job that it's evil and takes forever as the top mounts are very hard to get at. Does anyone have any experience of this job. I'm wondering if it might not be easier to just drop the entire rear subframe?
I have full workshop facilities including a 2 post lift, any advice would be appreciated.

I've recently changed shocks on a 1995 xjr so let's presume it's essentially the same job.
You don't need to get the subframe (A frame) completely off but I think you are as well to.....
Just remembered there is a complete how to do it online in several places, here's one http://www.watchet.dolphins.btinternet.co.uk/8rear...
or
http://jaguar.blackonyx.net/tech/shocks.htm
Just make sure it is the shocks that's the problem as there are quite a few components that produce knocks etc. (Diff output bearings, lower shock bush, subframe bushes)
I removed the A frame (subframe). The diff will stay inplace withought support.
Make sure you support the lower wishbone when you remove the lower shock bolt as it's the shock that holds the spring in place and the spring will fly out (and kill/mame you) if the lower wishbone is not supported.
Long job requiring some muscle, use hex sockets where ever possible, air wrench would be good also. As usual, the job starts off as 'replacing rear shocks' but often leads to £££ worth of new parts.
