My 1992 XJS has been standing now (indoors) for about 6 - 8 weeks, while I've been doing it up. Anyway, battery went flat but it did need a new one anyway, so fitted a new Bosch one but now it won't start or turn over. No problems before as it always fired up first time. All dash lights are on as per normal but no joy on starting it.
Has anyone any clue as to why this might suddenly happen as it was fine before, any tips or things to try?

One culprit in non cranking Jags would be the gear selector not being in Park. Give the selector a wiggle, also try starting in Neutral. If not that, need to start looking at electrical stuff.

1. Give the starter motor a smack with a hammer (not joking)
2. Squirt liberal amount of WD40 into each cylinder thru the plug hole, just in case a cylinder is stuck.
If its not turning over it must be mechanical.
3. Check battery has a high enough Cold Cranking rate for the car
4. Charge the old battery & give that one another go

Do you here the click when the starter motor turns and the gear engages the fly wheel ?

As a general thing, battery removal and replacement can sometimes trigger the immobiliser, Does your Jag have one?

Thanks for replies. I've tried the various suggestions but to no avail.

Yes it has an imobiliser fitted. It's the one with a red light and a black imobiliser key type thing that when pressed onto the contacts the red light goes out and then car should start but doesn't! Is there some way of resetting it once battery swap has been done?

Bump.....

Just wondering - do I need to disconnect and do away with the immobiliser?
