What to check on a X type 3.0
Discussion
Any rumbling from propshaft and transfer box is a reason for a hefty discount. Having both changed on mine this week for £1600. It's a common fault.
Clutch on mine is fine, no idea on expected longevity. Above bit is more of a concern!
Other than that they're pretty bomb proof.
Get under the car and stick a torch and your hands up under the sill covers. Some rust like buggers under there. Mine had surface rust when I checked acouple of weeks back, others rot out completely.
There should be no knocks, squeaks or rattles, should pull cleanly up to 3k then really go when you hoof it.
Steering often squeaks, it's not the wheel, but needs an additive in the PAS fluid.
Other than that just check anything you would normally. Make sure everything works and nothing leaks.
Plugs are a 70k/7yr job so should have been done. Bit of a sod to do them all as they're fiddly.
Mine is a 2002 3.0se manual, just on 68k, love it even if it is about to cost a chunk!

The 3.0 is AWD and the most expensive failure most X type AWD owners incur is the transfer box.
Owned 2 over the last 8 years, like the car but has common problems that never really appear to have been sorted during its production life 2001-2008(awd).
2003 2.5 awd mk1 (viscous coupling) sold in 2006, 45k in 3 years
1 .bushes replaced at 20k intervals (jags love bushs)
2. prop replaced under warranty for whine at different speeds (common fault)
2006 2.5 awd mk2 (no viscous coupling)present, 50k in 5 years
1 .bushes replaced at 20k intervals (jags still love bushs)
2. prop replaced under warranty for whine at different speeds (common fault not fixed in 5 years of production since 2001)
3. Clutch activator replaced bearing issue under warranty
4. transfer box (sealed for life?) was on its way at 45k, replaced (transfer box new £1000+, recon 400+, plenty around I wonder why?), Labour is a big job
As the car gets older the mechanical noise from props gets louder, unfortunately remedy would be point 2 again at my expense and the car is now at only 5 in a price where major item replacement could be more than the car is worth.
Make sure you take a car on along test drive let the car mechanicals, front drive, prop transfer box warm up and then listen for excess noise.
