Hi there

Test drove a 2000 S-type 3.0 V6 last night with 130k on the clock. Its a manual and drove very very well, smooth, quiet, no clunks, knocks or play in the steering.
Checked for water in boot, bone dry, checked for header tank leaking, no leaks, checked all electrics all fine apart drivers side regulator is gone, sounds like it was slipping or cogs warn down etc.
Car drove well, engine pulled strong, smooth, easy gear changes etc.

Checking MOT history online, both front suspension arms / ball joints were replaced 15,000 miles ago (2yr) and 1000 miles ago it had new rear trackrod ends and brake pipes, which is good as I know these cars eat through ball joints.

In order to bring the car upto full health I intend on doing the following myself and need recommendations on what parts and service items to buy and where from etc as this will be my first Jaguar:-

1. Oil - I believe its 5W-30, any preferred brand, fully synthetic best?
2. Oil filter - Best to stick with Jaguar branded or can I just go to Ford and buy the ST220 filter as the engine is same?
3. K&N panel filter - one available? I preferre K&N filters over paper ones as they give better filtration and breathing, any known issues?
4. Spark plugs - Any particular ones, I want quality decent ones not cheap poor ones.
5. Drivers side window regulator or repair kit - any ideas of where to source?
6. Inlet manifold gaskets - I believe when changing plugs its advisable to fit new inlet gaskets whilst at it, can I get these from Ford or only Jaguar and rough cost?

Are there any other items I should be looking at changing/servicing on one of these?

Apart from that a good valeting, polish and wax should see a good car.

Other things I am considering, transmission/diff oil, gearbox oil should I consider doing these? If so what oil/grade is used?

Lastly cambelt, there is no service history with the car and as such I am not sure if its being done, Jaguar advice every 10yr/100,000 miles, this car has done 133,000 miles. Is there any way I can check if its been done by looking or is it a case of trying to contact the previous owner who had it before the guy I am buying off as I know that owner had the car for 8 years. If it needs a new belt I see Jaguar charge £450 for this, is their a cambelt kit I can buy online and if so is it an easy job on this engine?

Thanks in advance, sorry for so many questions I just want to give the car a thorough going over and hopefully it will not explode. smile

This website seems a good source of parts:-

http://www.britishparts.co.uk/.sc/ms/cat/Jaguar%20...

Anyone here used them, are the parts OE quality or original etc?

Also the engine is a Jaguar one NOT a Ford! The only bit that is Ford is the basic block!
K & N filters are the work of the devil, quite a lot of info when you google them. I will not fit them to anything I own now. Add in a pollen filter to your service. Swine to change so I bet it hasn't been done. Also fuel filter, mine were a deseasals & post 04 (54 & 56) so different service bits.
Yup it is a camchain, so no belt. Window regs are a common fault pre-02 & I think cannot be fixed so it'll be a new 'un. I believe a pig of a job as well.

OK cool.

So for oil filter, best source Jaguar then?

Regards to air filter, shall just go with a paper filter then, or are there any other performance element filters to consider?

What does the pollen filter actually do, is that something to do with cleaning the air which comes into the cabin?

I shall do what I can myself but my get local garage to do fuel and pollen filter along with window regulator. smile

Employ first principles. It filters pollen. Now what is most likely to be affected by pollen, a big metal engine or lots of allergic snuffling humans?

Therefore it's for the cabin air. And not essential smile

The O.E. plugs are NGK part number TR6AP-13E. The original plugs fitted will be Ford Motorcraft ones but Jaguar now use NGK instead at OES level.

I work at NGK so happy to answer any questions you may have smile

Rang Jaguar today, amazed at how low prices and how good service is. They gave me 5% discount for simply mentioning here and I've ordered from Jaguar:-

Air filter
Oil Filter
Sump plug & washer
6x spark plugs
2x inlet manifold gaskets
Fuel filter
Pollen filter
Pipes/connectors/hoses under inlet manifold which can snap/break.

That little lot cost only £95. smile

Now gonna buy some Castrol Edge 5W-30 from Opie. smile

If you call a Jaguar dealer with the chassis number they should be able to give you a full list of every service it's had in the dealer network - if it ever had any.

For future reference Eurojag in Darlington, great service & good prices for some new, and mainly used parts. Great prices for new brake discs, exhaust silencers etc.

Berkshire Jag Components are very good on price, and misc bits, likewise David Manners.

Also worth a look at the Jaguarforum.co.uk ... loads of useful stuff on there.
Enjoy
