A friend of mine has a son, who is a bit of a petrolhead. His son wishes, as a first car to buy a 1st gen XK, and his father is reluctant to hold to the agreement that if the son bought the car, he would pay the insurance. He has asked me to do some research for him, and I don't really know where to start. Adrian Flux seems to look good, as does Liverpool Victoria. I wondered if there was anyone on here aged 17-21 who could point me to a good insurer, and what would be a normal quote?
Thanks very much

Assuming he doesnt have a big budget, is he aware of the running costs on an XK ? 20mpg, rust protection, servicing, cam chain replacement etc etc

I would be guessing on insurance but...
An 18 year old friend of mine pays £140pcm for her brand new car (C1) 1.0 litre and then pays £150pcm for the insurance on it.

Assuming the boy is putting insurance into his own name, I would expect approx £3000 for an insurance quote if you are lucky.

Most of us will have limited mileage policies or plenty of no claims, so im not sure you can go in that direction. I can only recommend www.confused.com.

I shall let him know that it is a long shot. Pretty sure my friend wouldn't pay that much for insurance.

I am guessing that if they are not willing to spend £3k on insurance it wont be the "real" mk1 xk, as they seem to go for circa £70-120k.

I guess the OP needs to clarify what he means by 1st Gen XK.

To me, a 1st gen XK means an XK 120 (the original XK)

My son is 21 and he looked to see how much it would cost him on an XK8, just over £1000, that was using confused.com, now he need to find another £3K to buy one lol

Sorry for not clarifying earlier, I mean the one from 1996. Have had a look at confused... £19000! There must have been some sort of mistake lol

Probably no mistake: they are telling you they don't want to insure you.

3/400bhp rwd
5/6 sec 0-60mph

For a first car!!! Did your friend really expect the insurance to be fighting for your business?

I think the mistake is pretty obvious - expecting an insurer to be interested in a new driver on a group 20 car!

Basically the insurance company is telling you that he IS going to have an accident.

Reminds me of the YouTube clip where a young driver takes his car to the Ring

Within something like 15 seconds he lost it !!

Fair enough. I didn't even think that insurance could cost that much, it's equal in price to a Veyron or an Enzo! Thanks for all of your responses, I shall tell my friend's son to get his head out of the clouds and think about an Aygo

yes

A friend of mine was quoted £13K on a E46 BMW at 18 so it's hardly suprising.

If you think you can insure a Veyron for a 17-20yr old for £19k you are deeper into cloud cuckoo land than I previously thought..
