Earlier this week I bought a brand new facelift XF 3.0 S Portfolio, and today took it on its first real run. 200 miles through some of North Wales' most beautiful roads highlighted the sat nav in the XF to be absolutely abysmal to the point I had resort to using the sat nav on my phone just to return home.

On several occasions the cars sat nav attempted to direct to leave the carriageway only to then request I rejoin at the same junction - going straight ahead at roundabouts etc. It had me going down side 'roads' only suitable for push bikes and its estimated journey times were optimistic in the extreme.

The disc is the latest version, and from what I can see I haven't selected any 'shortest route' modes.

Has anybody experienced similar problems? If so, how did you correct the issues?

The satnav I my S-Type did the same sometimes - oddly enough in Wales too! Is it set to 'shortest route'?

Anyway, it was so ponderous to use (can't alter it while moving, no postcodes, couldn't update) that I spent £99 on a TomTom instead. Now that does the navigating and the in-car screen is a handy scrolling map for orientation and back-up smile

I'll be honest, I think the Sat Nav in my XF is crap when compared with the most basic Tomtom, but I have got used to it.

Its stupidity at Motorway junctions really did almost cause me to put my fist into the screen not long ago! On the motorway I tend to zoom out on the map, from 1/16 (my normal viewing) to 1/4 mile setting, which allows me to see when it is about to do something stupid.

It seems that after I've taken a diversion for traffic, it has then tried to take me the same way the next time I do that journey, even if this time there's no traffic. Also, after a quick journey on A/B roads, it seems to try to take me down roads of that kind more often, I don't know if it is some kind of average speed memory on different types of roads that affect its planning, but it really does do some odd things from time to time.

In short, I think it tries to be too clever, but lacks the basic functionality of simple systems. I will say once entered the destination seems to be bang on the money, but I tend to ignore the diversions until I know I'm close. The traffic function has also caused issues, but setting the options to ignore the options like narrow road, or roadworks but leave the congestion one on seems to work best.

Thank you both.

I've reset the system and will wait until I have another long run before making any conclusions. I'm definitely going to be carrying my TomTom iPhone dock in the future.

I like the combination of both - they present information in different ways and complement each other.

The only criticism of the TomTom is that it takes several minutes to find the satellites from switch-on. That's fine if you're leaving home, but when starting from unknown territory and you reach a junction and your TomTom is still going 'durr', it can be bothersome. The in-car satnav is on instantly and even if you don't set a destination, you can drive it like a map so at least you can go in the right direction.
