For a while I've pondered over getting an XJR, either X300 or 308, but as prices of S-Type Rs are pretty good I'm thinking along those lines too (erindoors prefers the shape of the S-Type which helps negotiations with her smile). Can't say the normal S-Types do much for me style-wise, but something about the R appeals.

Do the S-Type R V8s have the X308 chain tensioner foibles too?

Are there any major issues unique to the S-Type R worth knowing about?

TIA, RJ

Re tensioners, i suspect the answer is:

4.0 V8 definitely yes.
4.2 V8 probably not.

IIRC there were some issues with electric parking brakes and the auto boxes on the earlier ones. Having said that, I would imagine maost would have been sorted by now.

I have had a 06 plate for just over 2 years now and I love it, maybe more than any other car I have owned.

If you like the looks (the R looks fantastic imo and in standard form not so much!) then there isnt much to NOT like with these cars. The noise is just superb (V8 with a supercharger whine makes me smile every single day), it pulls like a train, handles fairly well (I came from a 911 so very different!) and has most of the toys I need. In 2 years I have replaced the brakes and tyres once and apart form it being in at the moment for £450's worth of bits and bobs it really hasnt costs me much to run.

MPG isnt great (average around 20) but what do you expect from soething with 400bhp and this level of performance.

I usually look to keep a car for 2 years and change, this is the first time I can see no reason to do that so will keep it for a while longer. The cost of change Vs what I could actually get really doesnt add up for me.

Now they can be had for not much there really isnt anything that comes anywhere near with the full package it offers.
