30k 5.0 XKR next year?
Discussion
Ever since driving one of these a couple of years ago at Gaydon then again with a couple of dealers I've been smitten. Unfortunately for me I've never really wanted to spend more than 30'ish K on a car as I'm fairly comfortable with the costs/running/depreciation at that level.
I had been tempted at some of the 4.2 XKR's but have resisted thinking I would always want the 5.0 however I've noticed there are a couple of 5.0 XKR's dipping into the high 30's now (£37k). Just wondering if we'll see a £32k 5.0 xkr next year? If so I may be very tempted!

A 3 year old Jag is always the best buy IMHO. I had a new 4.2, which I just loved and have been seriously looking to get back in a 5.0. Agree the 5.0 XKR is a far better car. If we go double dip, then yes you will get one for £30k next year. But then again you may not have a job by then either!

wow... how the heck have I missed that, been trawling the classifieds for weeks. That is very tempting, but yes the immediate question that comes to mind is what's wrong with it?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2009-JAGUAR-XKR-SUPERCHA...

Hi just wondered how do you know the mileage is inaccurate?
Because the assumption is being made the mileage has been rounded to the nearest 1k or 10k (for the purposes of the advert). It could ofcourse actually have done exactly 20k miles. Or perhaps the seller didnt write down the exact mileage and so gave an approximation when listing the car. Ultimately if it wasn't priced lower then competing cars it probably wouldnt have been raised, but as it is people are going to look for possible clues that something is wrong. However, I've been looking at XJ's (X351) and the German alternatives recently. If the XK market is moving as slow, perhaps the seller just wants rid of it.

The discounts given on the new cars is always going to impact residuals...you giveth with one had and taketh with the other. Had I bought a new 911 instead of XKR for instance, I'd have paid £20-£30k more and it would have been this much more come trade in...is the loss actually any less when you've negotiated a good up-front deal? (well thats what I tell myself...maybe best to leave me in my own little world!) Whatever, these 5.0's in the £30k's are awesome buys with surely minimal depreciation for the next couple of years (there's surely still got to be a market or the 4.2s beneath them).

Yes, read the other thread with interest. When's the CX-16 out? I guess there will be a fair few XK owners switching for one of those.
My dealer was telling me that they're frustrated by the early announcement of the CX-16 as it has virtually killed interest in the XK's, despite them not really being aimed at the same class or price bracket (CX-16 is expected to be significantly cheaper the XK). Palmball said:
The seat also looks like it has well over £20ks worth of use! Still, if it's not cat c/d then that is exceptional and a real bummer for people like me who have bought new (but with eyes very much open!).

To be honest when you purchase a >£50k car, more often then not you will receive a kick in the nuts come resale time (unfortunately thats the voice of experience). Every now and then you get lucky (unfortunately not the voice of experience, just hearsay). The discounts given on the new cars is always going to impact residuals...you giveth with one had and taketh with the other. What I find particularly galling is when you take that hit but also end up with a dud. Atleast when you get a great car you have those memories to cushion the blow come resale time.
WRT new car offers they will eventually have to translate into price pressure on used cars (unless they are short lived or have some other caveat, i.e scrappage scheme). Although dealers can be quite intransient and stubborn in accepting this. I've been looking at XJ's and A7's. Audi dealers have essentially made my mind up for me by refusing to budge on used A7 prices, despite 16-18% on offer for new cars. They will have to budge eventually, but I'll probably be in an XJ by then.

Agree, but the C-X16 is the Jag to have! It will be using the latest tech on the market, it will be both desirable & affordable. Bring it on. My names already down.....5to1 said:

Yep, 100% agreed! However, I have experienced that luck you describe just the twice in my 15 years of car buying....1. I bought a BMW M6 for £35k 3 years ago and sold it 5 months later for £37k....amazing result given I bought it from a main dealer and sold it back to a main dealer (but different ones)! £2k profit on the horrendously depreciating M6....who the hell would have thought that!!!
2. I bought a 9-month old Gen-2 911 Turbo last year, drove it for 5 months and 5k miles and sold it for 'just' £2k less than I paid for it. OK, so thats still a £2k loss but still, to own what was a £90k car (and £115k to the first owner who obviously did lose a lot on the car!) for the equivalent of £400/month is a relative bargain.
