I am in the early stages of thinking about a late 2006 or 2007 XJR V8
Can anyone enlighten me or put me off buying one of these ?

Thanks in advance.

Assume you mean a post 2003 aluminium bodied car?

If so mechanically pretty bombproof. All you'll read with a bit of Googling about earlier XJ8/R problems with throttle bodies, timing chain tensioners waterpumps and Nicasil cylinder linings don't apply to the 4.2 engine.

More info on Honest John.

One essential maintainence job is have the "sealed for life" gearbox and 'diff oil changed. This was removed from the schedule to save money and has caused no end of grief on earlier models.

Occasional air suspension faults occur.

An XJR will have been bought to be driven hard which chews up discs, tyres and suspension components. Brembo brakes (option) very expensive to replace.

Only well known problem is corrosion under the paint finish. Many earlier cars have been affected and this has been covered extensivley on The Jaguar Forum and in the Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club. Apparently Jaguar have been less than cooperative with warranty rectification work on occasions and on others the problem has returned once treated.

Check inside front edge of boot lid, door and wing bottoms, door tops and round screens for any sign of paint bubbling or rectification work

Interested in one of these myself.

Any hints or tips as to what to look for? Are they reliable or do they need a lot of maintenance to keep on the road?

I had a 2003 4.2 XJR.....or as we preferred...."The Money Pit"

One owner 50k miles, FJSH 5 years old when purchased.

Brakes - I spent £2k on the brakes - my local Jaguar Indi eventually gave up and I went to the dealer. The brakes still were not right when I sold it; vibration under braking (new discs and pads....twice!).

Water ingress to the headlights - get the bumper off and have them sealed up, its cheaper than the Jag £900 board if they go due to water

The supercharged engine is littered with little hoses just waiting to fail and spray coolant onto the supercharger belt, which will then squeak its bits off when cold. So, you replace the S/C belt for it to happen again from a different hose the week after!

Tyres - Pirelli PZero - handle well, but flat spot very badly when left for more than 4 days.

Watch out for bucked wheels - this is common and even if only slight, it destroys the ride
