My 328i had exactly the same symptoms, including a lack of fault codes. Turned out to be the camshaft position sensor. Only got to the bottom of it by hooking it up to a laptop and driving it round until it did it and then reading the log of all the sensors. Was the car on a proper ODB2 reader or just a fault code checker? If you have no EML (or whatever Jaguar call that) light on a simple fault code checker will tell you nothing.

What happens to the rev counter and speedo when this happens?

I'd say probable suspects are:

Cam sensor.
Crank sensor.
Coil pack.
MAF (probably wouldn't throw an error if it's just reading back to 0).
Electrical short.

oohhh..right. well on a petrol car I'd say to clean out the IAC (idle air control) valve. I assume diesel cars have something similar? Also check the MAF (mass air flow) sensor and the EGR (Exhaust gas recirculation) valve. All simple and free things to check before you get into messing about with sensors and stuff. As I say though, if you sit in the car with a laptop logging the sensors you should be able to see very easily what's causing it.

Just seen this:

might be helpful?
